The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team participated in the annual Tunnel to Towers Run/Walk on Sunday, September 28.

An estimated 25,000 people honored the memory Stephen Siller - a New York City firefighter who gave his life on Sept. 11, 2001 – by participating in the 13th annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run and Walk through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel.

The run follows the footsteps of Siller. On 9/11, Siller abandoned his truck and ran through the tunnel with all his gear toward the World Trade Center. He was killed when the South Tower collapsed.

The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation has raised more than $40 million in its 13-year history.

The Stevens women's lacrosse players and coaches have participated in the event each of the last 10 years. Most run and some have volunteered in what has turned into a highlight of the fall season for the program.

"This event is meaningful to us because it hits close to home for almost everyone," said junior Erika Wilcox (Baldwinsville, N.Y.). "We are able to follow in the footsteps of a true hero, Stephen Siller, and pay tribute to him as well as the rest of the 9/11 victims. The whole experience is very moving and an awesome to be a part of"

There are tunnel to Towers Run/Walk events across the country from New York City to South Carolina to Georgia to Ohio to Florida.

The mission of the Foundation is to honor the sacrifice of Siller who laid down his life to save others on September 11, 2001.  It also honors our military and first responders who continue to make the supreme sacrifice of life and limb for our country.

"This is something we look forward to each and every year," said senior Amanda Ingersoll (Baldwinsville, N.Y.). "Not only is it an amazing experience, but it also allows us to come together as a team off the field and grow closer."
