Houghton Claims 1-0 Win Over Utica
HOUGHTON, N.Y.-- The Highlander Women's Soccer team claimed the exciting 1-0 victory over the Pioneers of Utica College.
In the first period, the Highlanders had 11 shots in the first period, 3 of which were shot on goals. There were also 3 corner kick opportunities for Houghton to score on. While the Highlanders were unable to score in the first period, so were the Pioneers. The Pioneers created only 1 shot on goal opportunity, not challenging Houghton goalie
Shawna Sprout.
While Utica claimed triple the amount of shots in the second period than they had in the first, as well as more corner kicks in the second period than that of the Highlanders, they were still unable to capitalize on the scoring opportunities presented to them.
For the second half of the game, Houghton again outnumbered Utica in the number of shots taken as well as shots on goal. Because of this, their probability of scoring proved to be true.
Nearly 70 minutes into the game, 25 minutes into the second period,
Stephany Ellison was able to break the mold. A smooth pass from
Nikki Garns allowed for Ellison to cross the shot from the left side of the goal to the right side of the net, putting the Highlanders up 1-0.
There were no serious threats on either side for the remaining 20 minutes of the game. The Highlanders outshot the Pioneers 20-8, as well as 4-2 in corner kicks. Sprout was credited with 4 saves on the night.
