Acevedo and Thomas Named to D3football.com Team of the Week
Utica College senior wide receiver Anthony Acevedo and Buffalo State junior defensive back Mitch Thomas have earned a spot on the
D3football.com Team of the Week. The Team of the Week honors selected players from each position on the field from nominees across all of Division III football.
Acevedo caught eight passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns as the Pioneers lost to the Sea Gulls. Acevedo, the reigning Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Year and the College's all-time leading receiver, eclipsed 3,000 receiving yards for his career as he now has 3,006 in just under four seasons at UC. He also became the first player in school-history to catch over 200 career passes, as he now has 205. His 178 yards receiving is the 4th most receiving yards in a single game in program-history.
Acevedo currently ranks second in the Empire 8 with an average of 104.4 yards per contest. In five games played he has caught 28 balls for 522 yards (18.6 yards per catch).
Thomas had a team-best 11 tackles to go with a pair of interceptions in Buffalo State's 38-27 victory at the No. 13-ranked Bombers. Thomas's first interception came in the end zone in the second quarter, thwarting an Ithaca scoring opportunity, and keeping the deficit just 17-7. After a Bengals' comeback, his second interception, early in the fourth quarter, put the game out of reach when he returned it 26 yards for a touchdown to give the Bengals a 38-17 lead.
Utica will show its support for Coach to Cure MD on Saturday during its homecoming game as the Pioneers host nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the contest will be televised live state-wide on Time Warner Cable Sports.
Buffalo State (5-1/3-1) will enjoy a bye this week before hosting Utica at 2 p.m. on Oct. 25.
