Stevens and Ithaca Net Wins
STEVENS 3, Brockport 0
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team began the Hartwick College Invitational with a three-set victory over SUNY Brockport on Friday evening in Oneonta, N.Y.
With the win, Stevens is now 21-4 overall, while Brockport falls to 15-8.
The Ducks swept the match with set scores of 25-20, 25-15, 25-22, and outhit Brockport, .265 to .098. Stevens notched 16 more kills – 41 to 25 – than the Golden Eagles and committed one less hitting error – 14 to 15. Stevens also benefitted from 11 blocking errors from Brockport.
Sophomore
Mary Tobin registered a match-high 15 kills to go along with 12 digs for a double-double and swung at a .393 clip.
Senior
Katie Hall and freshman
Brianna Evans each hit over .430 on the evening. Hall recorded seven kills on 13 swings with one error for a .462 hitting percentage, while Evans notched nine kills on 16 attempts and two errors to hit .438. Hall also added three blocks, three digs and two service aces. Evans posted 11 digs.
Fellow senior
Ashley Castillo dished out 37 assists to lead all players and chipped in five digs, while freshman
Sydni Horner set a match-high with 13 digs.
Sophomore
Christina Sciarra chipped in six kills with two aces for the Ducks.
ITHACA 3, HARTWICK 0
Ithaca defeated Hartwick in three sets (24-26, 9-25, 27-29) in the Hartwick/Holiday Inn Tournament opening match on Friday evening at 'Wick's Lambros Arena. The Hawks were neck and neck with Ithaca in both the first and third set but the Bombers came out on top in both. Hartwick drops to 7-15 on the season while the Bombers improve to 19-4 overall.
Ithaca led for a majority of the first set. The Bombers pushed their advantage to four points late, 20-16, but Hartwick responded with five straight points to take a 21-20 lead. Sophomore

Christine Confer added a block in the 'Wick rally.
Later, Hartwick faced two set points, 24-22, but the Hawks fought to tie it again after an Armstrong ace. IC would get the next two points, however, with Dylan Gawinski Stern finishing it off with a kill, 26-24.
The second set was dominated by the Bombers as they scored the first eight points and never looked back. They held at least a seven-point advantage for the rest of the set, taking it 25-9.
The Hawks flipped the script in the third set as they jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. They increased the margin to as many as five, 19-14, but seven of the next eight points went to Ithaca who surged ahead, 21-20.
Hartwick twice had set point but couldn't close it out. On both occasions, Hawk service aces kept the set going. The score was 27-27 when Gawinski Stern made it 28-27 Bombers on a kill and a 'Wick error on the next point gave Ithaca the set and the match, 29-27.
Armstrong led a trio of Hartwick players with at least seven kills. She had eight with
Rosa Maun and
Mary Beth DeCuyke chipping in seven apiece.
Kayla Baril added five kills.
Quincy Kinzel registered 28 assists and seven digs in the match.
Alyssa Zeitler had a team-high 12 digs. Baril and Armstrong each had nine.
Plattsburgh 3, UTICA 2
The Utica College volleyball team lost a five-set heartbreaker to Plattsburgh State Friday night on the opening game of the Clarkson Tournament.
The Cardinals took the first two sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-21 before the Pioneers battled back to win the next sets 25-21 and 25-15 forcing the fifth and deciding set. Plattsburgh was able to swing the momentum in the final set to take the 3-2 victory.
Freshman
Samantha Hoerning (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East) led the Pioneers with a career-high 11 kills while
Laura Homer-Gunther (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) had eight kills and
Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) totaled seven kills on the evening. Five players registered at least ten kills on the evening, including
Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury),
Nichole Sears (Boonville, NY/Adirondack),
Alexis Lyon (Prospect, NY/Holland Patent),
Chelsea Lauria (Erieville, NY/Cazenovia), and
Lora Allen(Dolgeville, NY/Dolgeville). Allen also added a team-high 29 assists.
Cortland 3, ST. JOHN FISHER 1
The St. John Fisher College volleyball team fell to non-conference opponent SUNY Cortland in four sets (25-16, 25-22, 25-17, 25-22) on Friday evening.
The Red Dragons took the first, third and fourth sets to claim their 10th win on the season. The Cardinals fought through the second set that saw 10 tied scores to win 25-22. With the loss, though, Fisher falls to 8-17 overall.
Anna Marcy and
Madison Karwas led Fisher's offense with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Amanda Miller added six and two blocks with another pair of blocks from Karwas.
Erica Stickler (18) and
Brooke Meader (16) combined for 34 assists.
Katie Mazierski paced the defense with 12 digs. Karwas, Stickler and
Erin Crandall added nine digs apiece.
