Hartwick, Stevens and Naz Earn Wins

HARTWICK 2, HOUGHTON 1
Hartwick fell behind but two goals 2:28 apart at the end of the first half proved to be the difference as the Hawks won their second consecutive Empire 8 Conference game of the season Saturday with a 2-1 win at Houghton.

Sophomores Mikaelan Stuiligross and Rebecca Reilly scored Hawks' goals to help them to the victory.

Hartwick goalie Yanna Boggio made four saves for the Hawks in cage.

ST. JOHN FISHER 4, ELMIRA 1
The St. John Fisher College field hockey rewarded its first graduating senior class on Senior Day as the Cardinals cruised to 4-1 victory over Elmira College on Saturday at Growney Stadium.  Fisher has now matched the program record for wins in a season of 10, set during the 2013 season.

With the win, Fisher improves to 10-4 overall and remains a perfect 6-0 in Empire 8 play, while Elmira falls to 1-13, 0-7 respectively.  Fisher has already clinched a spot in the Empire 8 Championship where it can be no worse than the three seed.

Fisher took control from the beginning, outshooting the Soaring Eagles 20-2 in the first half.

Elizabeth Cusack started the scoring for the Cardinals following up her own shot after the Elmira goalie surrendered a rebound at the 15:50 mark of the half.

The score would remain 1-0 until Fisher turned out two more goals in final three minutes of the half.  Emily Markarian took advantage of a ball squirting to her feet, firing a shot into the net with just over two minutes to play.

Stacie Skidmore kept her point streak alive scoring an unassisted goal with just :09 seconds left in the half to push the scoring streak to seven games.

Fisher took very little time to score the second half, scoring off a penalty corner three minutes in.  The Cardinals executed the corner to perfection as Skidmore settled a Marissa Vedella pass before Liz Baldwin blasted in her second goal of the season.

Elmira broke its scoreless drought in the 48th minute as Megan Brain was able to sneak a shot passed Danielle Famolaro.

Famolaro ended the game with on save in net for the Cardinals.

STEVENS 3, ITHACA 2
Junior midfielder Dailyn Brook recorded five second-half points to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team to a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over Empire 8 rival Ithaca College Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex.

The game was played in front of 500 fans and was part of Homecoming 2014.

With the win, Stevens controls its own destiny in the Empire 8. The Ducks are now 4-3 in the conference and in sole possession of fourth place with one game remaining in the conference on November 1 against Nazareth College. Naz (2-4) has two games left in the conference and with a win over Hartwick College on October 25 would set up what is essentially a play-in game for a berth in the E8 semis.

Trailing 2-0 after the first half, the Ducks put together a spirited comeback that started 5:15 into the second half. The deficit was sliced in half when sophomore midfielder Nolie Prouty was able to slip a pass in front to Brook for her first goal of the game and 11th of the season. Prouty pocketed her fifth assist of the season and Brook's diving effort on the play set the tone for the rest of the way.

Stevens (7-10 overall, 4-3 E8) pulled even 8:38 later with a gorgeous goal from sophomore forward Taylor Welch. On the play, Prouty carried into the left side of the circle and fed Brook in front. Brook evetnually controlled and tossed a shot toward the far post that Welch was able to deflect home for her ninth goal of the year.

The next 17-plus minutes of game time seemed to be spent entirely in the Ithaca zone as Stevens dominated possession and field position over that span. After countless chances, the Ducks received a golden opportunity for the lead when a stroke was awarded because an Ithaca defender used her body to block a Duck shot from going in.

Brook capitalized on the stroke, sneaking her shot inside the near post and lifting Stevens to the huge conference win.

Ithaca scored at 21:31 and 27:41 of the first half and had another chance via a penalty stroke, but Stevens' sophomore goalie Emily Stukenborg was up to the task.

Stukenborg finished the game with six saves to earn the win between the pipes for the Ducks. Ithaca goalie Katie Lass made nine saves in the loss for the Bombers.

Stevens finished the game with a 26-19 edge in shots, including an 18-5 margin in the second half. The Ducks also had a 20-11 advantage in penalty corners (15-2 in the second half).

UTICA 5, WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON 2
The Utica College field hockey team maintained its spot atop the Empire 8 Conference standings as it downed host Washington & Jefferson College, 5-2, Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers move to 13-1 on the season and remain unbeaten in the Empire 8 with a 7-0 record in the conference.  Utica stretches its win streak to 11 games headed into a huge contest at nationally-ranked No. 15 University of Rochester on Wednesday (6 p.m.).

Senior Hannah Mackey stretched her goal-scoring streak to 11 games as she netted her conference-leading 29th goal of the season, while classmate Louise Steele-Norton led the Pioneers with two goals on the day.  Senior Alaina Stojkovski netted her fourth goal in as many games and junior Colleen Dowling added her sixth of the year to pace the Pioneers.

Utica never trailed in the game as the Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half behind goals from Mackey and Steele-Norton.  The Presidents got one back at 47:25, but Steele-Norton and Stojkovski scored 68 seconds apart and Dowling added another tally just two minutes later off an assist from Nikki Kieffer to all but seal the victory.

Junior Kells Casey had five saves on the day, while W&J's Morgan Brozena had ten saves in the loss.

NAZARETH 3, St. Lawrence 2
Junior forward Catherine Willard scored her third goal of the game following a penalty corner with 1:55 to go in regulation time, lifting the visiting Golden Flyers to a 3-2 non-league NCAA Division III field hockey win over St. Lawrence on North Country Field Saturday afternoon.

Willard's goal, her team-leading 13th of the season, enabled the Golden Flyers to snap a six-game losing streak and lifted their overall record to 7-10. The Saints fell to 5-9.

The Saints outshot Nazareth 14-5 in the second half and spent the bulk of the period in the Nazareth end of the field, but the Flyers put the pressure on in the final two minutes, getting both of their second-half penalty corners and finally converting when Willard took a pass from Maggie Muzio and fired a shot toward the cage. The ball glanced off the post and while it appeared that Saint defender Carly Dziekan had blocked the ball out of the air on the goal line, officials ruled it a goal and the Flyers came away with the win.

St. Lawrence grabbed the early lead in the game as Sam Haab scored her fifth of the year when she picked up a rebound of a shot by Anna Hughes and put it back past Nazareth goalie Lauren Devine 15:36 into the game.

Willard then scored two goals just under two minutes apart to put the Flyers up 2-1. Her first was unassisted and came in a scramble in front of Saint goaltender Julia Hudson at 27:33 and the second came on a shot from the top of the circle off a penalty corner at 29:16 and came off an assist by Megan Paris.

The Saints, who did not substitute in the game, controlled the play after intermission and tied it at 2-2 10:19 into the half when Kara Pelosi scored her ninth of the year off a centering pass by Erica French following a SLU penalty corner.

St. Lawrence outshot Nazareth 27-15 and had 11 penalty corners to seven for the Flyers. Devine, making just her second start of the season and her fifth appearance overall, finished with 11 saves for Nazareth while Hudson made seven for the Saints.
