Ithaca Wins E8 Semifinal Over Elmira

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Ithaca College women's tennis team scored a 6-2 victory over Elmira in the semifinals of the Empire 8 Women's Tennis Championships on Saturday afternoon at Stevens. The victory improved Ithaca's overall record to 9-1 on the season and sends the Bombers to the championship match Sunday at 12:30 p.m. against host school and top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology. The championship match will be played indoors at Binghamton Racquet Club in Edgewater, N.J.
 
Ithaca held a 2-1 advantage after the doubles matches. Kelly Fishback and Alyssa Steinweis were 8-1 winners at third doubles to get the Bombers on the board, and Allison Vizgaitis and Maddie Overholt won 8-3 at second doubles. Elmira pulled out an 8-6 win at first doubles.
 
In singles play, Ithaca extended its lead with a 6-2, 6-0 win by Fishback at fourth singles. Elmira answered with a win at fifth singles, but Ithaca closed out the dual with three more wins in singles play as Steinweis won 6-4, 6-2 at third singles, and Grosberg and Vizgaitis closed out their matches simultaneously. Carly Siegel split the first two sets of her match at first singles and that was unfinished.
 
Ithaca takes on Stevens for the conference title on Sunday. Ithaca is seeking its 10th consecutive conference title. Stevens won the regular-season dual between the teams by a 5-4 score. In the earlier semifinal Saturday, Stevens defeated Alfred 5-1.
