STEVENS
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team completed a perfect weekend to win the Hartwick College Invitational with a pair of victories over SUNY Oswego and St. Lawrence University on Saturday.

Stevens (23-4) swept both counterparts on the afternoon to secure the 3-0 weekend in Oneonta, N.Y. The Ducks opened against Oswego and took down the Lakers, 25-18, 25-18, 25-19, and then blanked St. Lawrence, 25-18, 25-16, 25-20. The past seven triumphs for Stevens have all been sweeps.

Sophomore Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) was named the Invitational's Most Valuable Player and freshman Brianna Evans (Spokane, Wash.) landed on the All-Tournament Team.

Stevens 3, Oswego 0 
In the opener, the Ducks hit .237 as a team and tallied 13 service aces. On the other side, Oswego was held to just a .094 hitting percentage – 23 kills, 14 errors, 96 attempts.

Tobin and junior Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) each tallied 10 kills to lead all players. Tobin swung at a .391 clip to go along with 13 digs, while Thomas hit .364 with three blocks.

Junior Becca Youngman (Rochester, N.Y.) was next in line in kills with eight and added five digs. Senior Ashley Castillo (Cresskill, N.J.) dished out a match-best 30 assists and registered 13 digs with two blocks (one solo).

Sophomore Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) recorded a majority of the team's 13 aces with seven to her credit, while freshman Sydni Horner (Columbia, Md.) contributed 12 digs.

Junior Catie Shelton (Central Square, N.Y.) notched six digs and senior Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) added four digs, two aces and two kills.

Stevens 3, St. Lawrence 0
The Ducks once again benefitted from a struggling offense by their opponent, as the Saints committed 23 attack errors and hit .070. A contributing factor to that was the stellar defensive play at the new by Stevens, who tallied nine total blocks, including six solo.

Tobin was once again the team's top offensive threat, putting down 11 kills with nine digs. Thomas ranked second on the team with six kills to complete her day.

Sciarra filled the stat sheet with four kills, three digs, three blocks (two solo) and two aces, while Hall had four kills and four total blocks.

Evans added seven digs, three blocks (two solo), three kills and an ace. Castillo controlled the offense with another match-high 24 assists.

Horner finished the match with a player-high 14 digs.


NAZARETH
Nazareth defeated visiting Cortland in four sets in a women's volleyball match on Saturday afternoon. The scores of the match were 25-20, 25-13, 21-25, 25-21. Junior Jennifer Hicks amassed a match-high 14 kills to lead the Golden Flyers. Three additional Golden Flyers finished in double-digits in kills for Nazareth's balanced attack as senior Kassandra Buseck tallied 11 kills and classmates Maria Allocco and Olivia Harrigan each had 10 kills.
 
With the victory, Nazareth improves to 20-6 overall. Following the loss, the Red Dragons drop to 10-17 overall.
 
The Golden Flyers surged to a two-set advantage with hitting percentages of .400 or better in each of the sets. Nazareth connected on 16 kills and only two errors on 35 total attempts for a .400 percentage in the first set, then the Golden Flyers pounded 15 kills and only three errors on 28 attempts for a .429 attack percentage in the second set. Hicks and Buseck combined for 11 kills and only one error in the first set. In the second set, Nazareth used a balanced attack with six players recording kills. Sophomore Cady Messmer tallied four kills in the second, followed by three kills apiece by Hicks and Harrigan.
 
In the third set, the Golden Flyers' attack slowed, connecting on only nine kills and committing 10 attack errors. Nazareth rebounded in the fourth set with 14 kills and seven hitting errors for a .175 attack percentage. Harrigan had five of her kills in the final set. Allocco and Hicks each added three. Sophomore Madi Wickens finished with a match-high 40 assists as she directed most of the Golden Flyers' offense.
 
Nazareth's defense, meanwhile, held Cortland to attack percentages of .257, .000, .027, and .000 over the course of the match. The Red Dragons had 22 total kills and managed only four kills in the second set. Sophomore Maureen Thayer and Buseck had 12 digs and 10 digs, respectively. Buseck also had an impact at the net with two solo blocks and three assisted blocks. Allocco added one solo block and three assisted blocks while Hicks recorded three assisted blocks.
 
 
ST. JOHN FISHER
The St. John Fisher College volleyball team split two non-conference matches on Saturday afternoon at the Buffalo State Invitational. The Cardinals are now 9-18 overall after defeating Hilbert, 3-1, and falling to the host Bengals, 3-0.
 
Hilbert took the first set 25-23 but the Cardinals fought back and won the next three sets decisively (25-21, 25-16, 25-17).
 
 
The Bengals swept Fisher in three straight sets 25-21, 25-14 and 25-16.
 
Anna Marcy posted a 12-point match with 10 kills, 12 digs and two block solos. Madison Karwas added nine kills and 13 digs. Erica Stickler rounded out the offense with 21 assists.
 
Katie Mazierski led the defense with 18 digs.
 
 
ELMIRA
The Elmira College women's volleyball team (6-16) continued their strong play this afternoon as the Soaring Eagles split a pair of matches at the Hunter Tri-Match.  Elmira dropped the opening match to host Hunter College (15-13), 3-0, before edging Rutgers University-Camden (5-21) in five sets.  The Soaring Eagles are now 4-1 in their last five matches.
 
Elmira College 0, Hunter College 3 -- 25-19, 25-15, 25-22
Host Hunter College swept the Soaring Eagles 3-0 in the first match of today's tri-match.  Elmira had their chances to take the opening set after going up by as many as six points at 16-10.  However, the Hawks would win 15 of the next 18 points to claim the first set, 25-19. 
 
The second set was competitive for the majority of the time until the Hawks pulled away midway through the set when Hunter won 11 of 12 points to take a comfortable 23-13 lead which eventually turned into a 25-15 win.  Elmira nearly forced a fourth set when they took a 16-12 lead in the third but the Hawks would again make another significant run, winning eight of the next nine points to take a 20-17 lead that would result in a 25-22 win for the Hawks.
 
Kelsey Ross '16 led Elmira's offense with 10 kills, her second double-digit kill effort in EC's last three matches.  EC setter, Sami Hanes '16, totaled 20 assists
 
Elmira College 3, Rutgers University-Camden 2 -- 25-15, 16-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-10
It took a come-from-behind effort for the Soaring Eagles to pull out the second match against Rutgers University-Camden as the Purple and Gold trailed 2-1 before winning the final two sets for their sixth win of the season.
 
Elmira nearly had today's match stolen from them in four sets as the Soaring Eagles trailed 20-17 in the fourth set.  However, EC would win eight of the next 11 points to close out the set 25-23 and keep their hopes of a victory alive. 
 
In the final set, Elmira showed how resilient they have been in fifth sets as they took control by going up 8-4.  Rutgers-Camden cut the Soaring Eagle lead to one at 9-8 but a 6-2 run by Elmira closed the door on a comeback as EC claimed the final set, 15-10.  With the win, Elmira improves to 3-1 in five set matches this year.
 
Elmira had two players finish with 10-plus kills, including Ashley Heiman '16 and Kierstin Derr '16 who logged 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Hanes recorded 37 assists to bring her two-match total to 57.  Defensively, Elmira was led by libero Samantha Hawksley '16 who made a career-high 20 digs.  Derr and Ross also chipped in with 16 and 11 digs, respectively. 
 
 
HARTWICK
Hartwick dropped a four-set match in their second contest of the 2014 Hartwick/Holiday Inn Tournament on Saturday at Lambros Arena. The two teams split the first two sets with the Lakers taking the first, 25-22, and the Hawks grabbing the second, 25-20. Oswego took sets three and four by scores of 25-21 ad 25-15.
           
In the opening set with the score 17-all, the Lakers would register three straight points for a 20-17 edge. A Kayla Baril (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk) kill for the Hawks pulled them within one, 21-20, but four straight Oswego points put the visitors one point from the set. Hartwick got the next two points but got no closer as the Lakers were up 1-0.
           
Hartwick took the lead in the second set, 5-4, and the never relinquished it. The Hawks led by as many as nine points, 21-12. Oswego mounted a comeback, tallying seven of the next nine points to cut the deficit to four, 23-19. A Laker service error followed by a Baril kill finished off the set and the Hawks were all even at 1-1.
           
The third set went back and forth with the Hawks holding the advantage through much of the first half of the set. Senior Christine Confer (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) delivered a kill to put Hartwick up 13-12 but the Lakers would rally to take a three-point advantage. 'Wick had a rally of its own to take a 19-18 lead but seven of the last night points went to the Lakers.
           
The Hawks stuck with the Lakers in the fourth set, trailing by just a 12-11 margin. But Oswego would outscore the Hawks 13-4 to close the set as the Lakers scored the 3-1 victory.
           
Hartwick later wrapped up tournament play against Brockport. The Hawks got off to a great start taking the first set, 25-21. The Golden Flyers edged out the Hawks by three in the second set, 25-22, and then took a 2-1 lead in the third after outlasting the hosts, 26-24. Brockport closed out the 3-1 victory, 25-18, in the fourth set.
 
Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing), Quincy Kinzel (Scotia, NY/Guilderland), and Baril each registered double-doubles for the match. Armstrong had 18 digs and 10 kills, Kinzel had 28 assists and 10 digs, with Baril adding 17 digs and a team-high 11 kills. Armstrong would be named to the all-tournament team for her efforts.
 
Alyssa Zeitler (Chardon, OH/Berkshire) registered a team-high 23 digs. Mary Beth DeCuyke (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) contributed nine kills and eight digs.
 
 
UTICA
The Utica College volleyball team lost back-to-back contests Saturday at the Clarkson Tournament.  The Pioneers lost both matches 3-0 as they were defeated by SUNY Canton (25-19, 25-21, 25-12) and host Clarkson (25-11, 25-15, 25-10).  UC was led by Brandi Blaszak (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) who tallied eight digs and Briona Enny (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury)  who posted 23 digs on the afternoon.
 
Utica has now lost nine straight as its falls to 8-19 overall and returns to the hardwood Wednesday as it journeys across town to face SUNYIT (Marcy, NY).  The Canton Kangaroos move their season mark to 18-5 while the Golden Knights improve to 25-3.
 
In game against Canton, UC battled in the first two sets losing by a combined 10 points however the Roo's turned in on in the third to close out the match, 25-12. Blaszak and Samantha Hoerning (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East) each recorded four kills while Laura Homer-Gunther (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) chipped with three for UC. Enny racked up 15 digs and Laura Allen put up 13 assist, both team high's.
 
In the second match, the host Golden Knights did not allow more than 15 points in a set to U Cas they recorded their 25th victory of the season.  Blaszak, Enny and Allen all registered team-high's.  Blaszak had four kills, Enny eight digs and Allen seven assists.
