Hawks, Ducks and Pioneers Win on the Road
HARTWICK 3, Cobleskill 1
Freshman
Kayla Baril and sophomore
Hannah Armstrong (Lansing, NY/Lansing) combined for 27 kills and sophomore
Quincy Kinzel registered a career-high 46 assists as Hartwick's volleyball team got into the win column with a 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-16, 25-21) over SUNY Cobleskill on Wednesday evening.
The Hawks won the first set with relative ease by a margin of 25-15 only to have the host Fighting Tigers respond in the second set, 25-23, to even the match at 1-1.
'Wick rolled in the third set, 25-16, and closed the match out in the fourth by a count of 25-21.
Baril, Armstrong, and Kinzel each accumulated double-doubles for the Hawks. Baril had a team-high 14 kills and 16 digs. Armstrong added 11 kills and a team-high 20 digs. Kinzel contributed 11 digs to go along with her 46 assists. She also had six kills.
Junior
Mary Beth DeCuyke recorded eight kills and six digs for the Hawks. Freshman
Rosa Maun notched seven kills.
Senior
Christine Confer (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) and freshman
Nicole Wyse added five and four kills, respectively.
Freshman
Ashley Werner secured 18 digs. Sophomore
Meagan Potter picked up eight.
STEVENS 3, NYU 2
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team traveled across the Hudson River and took down New York University in five sets on Wednesday evening. With the fifth-straight win, Stevens is now 24-4 on the season.
The Ducks came away with the victory, 25-19, 21-25, 25-17, 17-25, 15-9, and served exceptionally well with 14 aces. Both teams recorded 49 kills on the night, while Stevens was plus-eight in aces and NYU held the same edge in total blocks (11 to 3).
Sophomore
Mary Tobin paced the Ducks in kills and digs with 16 and 19, respectively. Tobin also finished the match with a game-high 16.5 points.
Freshman
Brianna Evans tallied 14 points on a match-best five aces with eight kills and 12 digs. Junior
Annemarie Thomas contributed nine kills from the middle.
Senior
Ashley Castillo dished out 39 assists to go along with eight digs and four kills, while classmate
Katie Hall posted six kills, three aces and three digs.
Sophomore
Christina Sciarra chipped in three kills, aces and digs, while freshman
Sydni Horner tallied 18 digs and two aces.
Junior
Catie Shelton added eight digs.
UTICA 3, SUNYIT 0
The Utica College volleyball team got back on track Wednesday night as it downed crosstown rival, SUNYIT 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-17) in non-conference action.
With the win, the Pioneers snap an eight-game losing streak and improve to 2-1 against SUNYIT this season.
Freshman
Alaina Wickwire and sophomore
Brandi Blaszak each had ten kills on the evening to lead the Pioneers and Wickwire also added nine digs. Freshman
Samantha Hoerning tallied nine kills, while
Laura Homer-Gunther had six kills. Senior
Briona Enny had a team-high 13 digs, followed closely by junior
Lora Allen, who also had a team-best 31 assists. Freshman
Michaline Rubas had a good showing as she collected six kills, four digs, and one service ace.
Wells 3, ITHACA 2
The Ithaca College volleyball team fell in five sets to visiting Wells College on Wednesday at Ben Light Gymnasium. The Bombers rallied to win the fourth set and force a deciding fifth set, that Wells won and captured the dual match. Match scores were 25-23, 22-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-7. Ithaca is 20-8 on the season and Wells improved to 19-9.
Wells built a 10-point advantage in the first set at 19-9, but Ithaca made a comeback effort that fell just short. In the second set, Ithaca won three straight points at 16-16 to build a 19-16 lead and went on to the victory. Wells won the third set after jumping out to a 6-1 lead. In the fourth set, Ithaca trailed 9-7 early on but went on a 7-1 run to take a 19-13 lead. The Bombers held on for a 25-23 win to force the deciding set. Wells won six of the last seven points in the fifth set for the win.
Ithaca was led by 19 kills from
Joelle Goldstein, the only player to record double-digit kills in the match.
Kayla Gromen had 44 assists.
Myan Idziur had 18 digs, Gromen added 17 and Goldstein had 15 for Ithaca. Gromen led Ithaca with four block assists.
Maggie Mutschler had two service aces.
