Houghton Win in OT; W&J Earns Shutout

WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON 5, Bethany 0
Lauren Brown scored twice in the opening 20 minutes and Washington & Jefferson swept the season series from Bethany after a 5-0 victory on Wednesday night at Cameron Stadium. 

The Presidents (10-7) extended their win streak versus the Bison to six.  W&J has now won at least 10 games in five consecutive seasons.  The victory also helped Head Coach Jomara Coghlan inch closer to her 100th career victory (98-51 in eight seasons). 

Victoria Forkus slid a pass across to Brown for the opening goal at the 12:49 mark.  Brown struck again seven minutes later to tie Amanda Steffey for the team lead with 11 goals.  Gina Taglieri and Catherine Beaudoin assisted on the goal. 

Taglieri notched her second assist early in the second half on a Caroline Kallos goal, while Steffey reclaimed the team lead in goals with her 12th just 29 seconds later.  However, Brown netted her third goal of the match to tie Steffey for the team-high goal total once again.

Beaudoin's pair of assists gave her 79 career points (30g, 19a) which leaves her only five behind Erin Barno for third place in school history.  The 19 assists are tied for fourth place in the school record book. 

Morgan Brozena earned the win in goal after making three saves in each half.  W&J outshot Bethany 18-6. 


HOUGHTON 2, Brockport 1 (OT)
The Houghton Field Hockey team fought a hard battle, coming out on top to beat the Golden Eagles of SUNY Brockport 2-1 in overtime. 

In the first half of the first period, there was a lot of action on the Highlanders offensive end; 5 shots and 3 penalty corners in 3 minutes. While there were numerous opportunities for Houghton to score, the Brockport goalie did not let her guard down. 

Nearly 21 minutes into the first period, the Golden Eagles broke the silence by scoring on a massive scramble in front of the net. Highlander goalie Elizabeth Piszker was credited with 11 saves in the first period.

Houghton went into the second period trailing 1-0 to SUNY Brockport. Neither team took the offensive initiative during the beginning of the second period. It was exactly 22 minutes into the second period when the Highlander offense starting coming alive. For the next 6 minutes 42 seconds leading up to a Houghton goal, the Highlanders maintained possession a majority of the time. With the end of the period coming near, Kelsie Ashley was able to put one in the net off of a penalty corner by Colleen Sullivan; Sullivan was credited with the assist. 

After a 14 minute battle in overtime, with a shot 15 feet out from the goal line, Houghton was able to confirm the win with another goal by Ashley. Tyler Reese was credited with the assist on the Highlander goal. With the execution of this goal, Houghton was able to claim the 2-1 overtime victory!

Piszker recorded 18 saves on the night. The Highlanders outnumbered the Golden Eagles in shots (27-20) and penalty corners (18-3).


Oneonta 3, UTICA 1
The nationally ranked No. 20 Utica College field hockey team had its school record 13-game winning streak snapped Wednesday afternoon as it fell to Oneonta, 3-1, in non-conference action. 
 
Senior Louise Steele-Norton scored the lone goal for the Pioneers in the seventh minute, unassisted, for her 13th tally of the season.  The goal was Steele-Norton's fifth in as many games.  The Pioneers let the lead slip away, however, as the Red Dragons scored three unanswered goals to move to 11-6 on the year.  Oneonta's Bailee Barrett scored all three goals for the Red Dragons in the victory.
 
UC's Samantha Whitehouse made seven saves in the loss, while her counterpart, Tess Tracy also made seven stops.  Each team fire 17 shots on the day, while Oneonta held a slight 8-7 advantage in penalty corners. 
 
Utica drops to 15-2 on the season.  The Pioneers return home Saturday for an Empire 8 rubber match against St. John Fisher College, which is also 7-0 in conference play.  The winner will take home the E8 regular season title and hosting rights for the conference tournament.  Saturday's game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.


Geneseo 2, ST. JOHN FISHER 1
The St. John Fisher College field hockey team dominated host SUNY Geneseo, but could only find the back of the cage on one occasion, as the Cardinals dropped a 2-1 decision to the Knights on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

Fisher held a 2:1 ratio in shots, tallying 18 to Geneseo's 9, and finished the day with 14 penalty corners (Geneseo had 4).

The Knights took the lead for good late in the first half and added another goal early in the second period.

Fisher's lone goal came from senior Marissa Vedella, who banged home a rebound from six yards out.

Goalie Danielle Famolaro tallied two saves for the Cardinals (11-6).


Rochester 6, ELMIRA 1
The Elmira College women's field hockey (2-14) fell to No. 19 University of Rochester (14-4) 6-1 this evening.  Hollie Gravelle '18 scored the first goal of her career in today's action.
 
The Yellow Jackets took a 4-0 lead just 10:24 into the first half. With just 3:03 left in the first half, Atupele Machika '18 found the ball in a scrum in front of the net and passed it over to Gravelle who punched it home to trail Rochester, 4-1. Mikayla Rebusmen '17 made nine saves in the half for the Purple and Gold.
 
The Soaring Eagles could not over come Rochester's offensive pressure as the Yellow Jacket's scored two more goals and outshoot the Purple and Gold 45-4 in the game. Julie Hockenberger '18 stopped 12 shots in the second half for the Soaring Eagles.


Skidmore 9, HARTWICK 0
Nationally No. 12 Skidmore scored seven times in an 11:58 span in the first half to take down the Hartwick Hawks' field hockey team Wednesday in Saratoga. 'Wick slips to 4-13 overall while the Thoroughbreds improve to 14-3.
           
Skidmore had seven different goal scorers in the contest, led by Dani DeGregory's three goals. Krista Lamoreaux added a goal and three assists and Jenn Hanks contributed one goal and one helper.
           
Hartwick starting goalkeeper Jilian Sabatino made 13 saves in cage in 40:12 of action.Laura Downey relieved her for the final 29:48 and made eight saves. Jen Spagnuolo also recorded a defensive save.
