Naz Wins Twice; Stevens and Ithaca Earn One Win

ITHACA
The Bombers defeated Plattsburgh 3-0.

Rylie Bean and Joelle Goldstein had 11 kills each. Molly Brown had 12 assists, while Carly Garone had 10 assists and Kayla Gromen had 10 assists. Marlee Wierda served six aces and Dylan Gawinski Stern had three. Myan Idziur and Maggie Mutschler had six digs each. Katie Hartman had three solo blocks and four block assists.


NAZARETH
Senior Maria Allocco had 14 kills and four service aces and sophomore setter Madi Wickens combined 38 assists with 11 digs as Nazareth held off a surge by Kean to take a non-conference women's volleyball match in five sets. Nazareth won by scores of 23-25, 25-14, 25-16, 23-15, 15-12 in its first match at the New York State Regional Challenge hosted by Stevens. Nazareth swept New York University in the second match by scores of 25-20, 25-22, 25-13.

At 24-9 overall, Nazareth is scheduled to play Montclair and Rowan Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. respectively. Kean is 15-16 overall and NYU is 19-14.

Nazareth used 18 service aces, including five in the decisive fifth set, to control the match against Kean. Sophomore Rachel Williamson had five aces, sophomore Brianna Spears added four and sophomore Cady Messmer had three.

Trailing 10-9 in the fifth set, Nazareth recovered by scoring three straight points to take the lead for good. Allocco and Messmer combined for a block to square the set at 10-10 and then Allocco served up two straight aces to make it 12-10. Three Kean attack errors enabled Nazareth to close out the match.

After dropping the first set, Nazareth had 22 kills across the second and third sets to win those easily. Allocco had seven of her kills over those two sets and senior Olivia Harrigan added four more. In addition, Williamson served up four of her aces in succession to seal the third set.

Harrigan finished with nine kills and six digs and senior Kassandra Buseck had 10 kills. Other stats included 19 digs for Maureen Thayer, six kills and 12 digs for Messmer and eight kills for junior Jennifer Hicks.

In the NYU match, Allocco and Buseck each had 12 kills and Wickens contributed 37 assists. The Golden Flyers posted an efficient hitting percentage of .379 (45-12-87) and had 12 more service aces with Messmer accounting for six of those.


STEVENS
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team played a pair of four-set matches in the opening day of the NYS Regional Challenge in Canavan Arena and came away with a 1-1 record.

Stevens (28-5) took down Rowan, 3-1, to start the afternoon, but fell to No. 15 Clarkson University, 3-1, in the final match of the evening to snap a nine-match winning streak.
 
The Ducks cruised in their three set victories, 25-14, 25-11, 25-16, but stumbled in the second set, 25-23, which prevented the sweep to open the NYS Regional Challenge against Rowan.
 
Stevens held a significant advantage in hitting percentage, .325 to .073, and tallied eight total blocks to just one for Rowan.
 
The first set was the only one for Stevens in which the team did not reach double-digit kills. The Ducks still did, however, hit .296 in the set. Stevens put together its best game of the match in the second set with 16 kills and just three errors in 24 attempts for a .542 clip. In the third set, the Ducks slid down to a .179 percentage, but responded with .361 in the clincher.
 
Sophomore Mary Tobin paced the match with 16 kills (.306 percentage) and 11 digs with three service aces, while classmate Christina Sciarra swung at a .355 clip with 13 kills on 31 tries, to go along with five digs and three blocks.
 
Senior Katie Hall was the third Ducks to reach double-digit kills with 11 and swung for an impressive .500 percentage. Hall also added four digs and four total blocks.
 
Fellow senior Ashley Castillo handed out a match-best 40 assists with five digs, while freshman Sydni Horner contributed 22 digs to lead all players and handed out five assists.
 
Freshman Brianna Evans finished the match with nine kills, nine digs, two aces and two blocks. Junior Annemarie Thomas put down three of her six kill attempts and chipped in two block assists.
 
In the nightcap, the Ducks seemed destined to pull off the upset after winning the first set, 25-22, but Clarkson took control of the match with a 25-15 set two win. The Golden Knights then closed out the showdown with 25-21 and 25-18 wins in the final two sets.

Stevens was outhit in the match by .102 (.288 to .186) and were on the wrong end of a 15-to-4 difference in service aces.

Tobin was tops again on the team with 13 kills to go along with 14 digs. Evans propelled Stevens in hitting percentage at .348 with 10 kills on 23 attempts. She also had three blocks.

Castillo handed out 30 assists with six digs, while Horner notched 16 digs.

Sciarra added seven kills and two aces.

Stevens had no answer for Clarkson's Aishvina Arasu who put down 21 kills on 40 attempts with just three errors. Victoria Kirkemo also put together a solid match with 12 kills and six service aces, while Adrienne Walker swung at a .550 clip with 13 kills on 20 tries.


ELMIRA
The Elmira College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches this afternoon at the New York State Regional Challenge.  Elmira fell in the opening match to the Rochester Institute of Technology, 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-15), before dropping the nightcap to Clarkson University 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-8). 
 
Elmira dropped their opening match to the Tigers of RIT in three sets.  Elmira's offense had troubles putting balls away as EC totaled just 22 kills as a team. Sami Hanes '16 logged 20 assists in the loss while Paola Ortiz '16 made 13 digs, the first time she has posted double-digit digs since Elmira's September 16th matchup with Ithaca College.
 
EC's struggles continued in the nightcap as the Golden Knights bested the Soaring Eagles in straight sets.  Ashley Heiman '16 led Elmira's offense with eight kills while Hanes posted 16 assists.  Defensively, Kierstin Derr '16 led the Soaring Eagles with 10 digs.
 

HARTWICK
Hartwick women's volleyball fell in its first two matches to two 20-win teams on Friday night at the Oneonta State Dig Pink Invitational at Dewar Arena. The Hawks lost in three to St. Lawrence and in four to Hunter (20-13).
           
St. Lawrence (23-11) avenged a 3-1 loss on its own court to the Hawks at the Canton Classic on September 26 in today's tournament opener. Final scores were 25-16, 25-16, 25-14.
           
Hartwick managed a total of 19 kills in the match. Freshmen Kayla Baril and Rosa Maun had the team-high with five apiece. Senior Christine Confer added four.
           
Sophomore Quincy Kinzel had 16 assists and seven digs for the Hawks. Alyssa Zeitler recorded a team-best 14 digs. Baril and Hannah Armstrong each had seven.
           
The Saints also had a balanced attack with Masha Kolesnikova (7), Cristina Deschaine (6), and Becky Briggs (5) leading the way in kills. Mariah Dignan registered 10 digs and Jenna Street contributed 14 assists.
           
In their second match, the Hawks of Hunter took the opening set 25-16 before Hartwick drew even, edging its opponent 28-26. Hunter picked up sets number three (25-17) and four (25-18) to score the victory.
           
Baril and Armstrong each earned double-doubles to pace Hartwick. Both players had 10 kills with Armstrong securing a team-high 22 digs. Baril added 15 digs. Junior Mary Beth DeCuyke would also have 10 kills for 'Wick and Confer contributed offensively with six.
           
Zeitler accumulated 19 digs in the match with freshman Ashley Werner recording 16. Kinzel would tally 34 assists and eight digs.


HOUGHTON
Houghton jumped out to a two-set lead but gave up three-straight to Cortland in a 3-2 loss on the first day of the Highlanders Invitational Tournament on Friday. Scores were 25-23, 25-19, 20-25, 23-25, 16-18.

The Highlanders looked to have things in hand after grabbing two tough games to start the night, but the Dragons roared back to two-straight, sending the match to the decisive fifth set. Houghton fell behind 9-6 in the fifth, but climbed back in and actually had two match points at 14-13 and 16-15, but Cortland closed the match with three straight points to grab the win.

Hattie Burgher led the attack for Houghton with 22 kills and .432 hitting percentage. She also added 16 digs. Hannah Compeau chipped in with 16 kills and 14 digs. Laurel Wroblicky finished with a team-high 22 digs, while Meagan Palm (11 kills) and Anna Coryell (42 assists) also turned in strong performances.


ALFRED
The Alfred University women's volleyball team dropped its first match out of a three-match, two day weekend at Houghton College against Buffalo State, 3-0 Friday evening.

Freshman Jacquelynn Hicks (Greenville, NY/Greenville) led the Saxons (5-24, 1-7 Empire 8) with eight kills off of 19 attempts and added a block solo and block assist. Jessica Crooks led the Bengals (22-10, 4-5 SUNYAC) with six kills from 9 attempts, a game-high seven block assists and one block assist.

The second set was the top performance for Alfred on the evening, falling by two, 23-25. The Saxons loss the first set 7-25 and the third with a 13-25 outing. Other top performers for the night were freshman Aubrey Totsline (Rochester, NY/Fairport) with 17 assists, one ace and one dig while junior Brianna Dudick (Somers, NY/Somers) added three kills from eight attempts, one ace and one assisted block.
