SUMTER, S.C. (
October 9, 2014) – Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis junior Matthew Heinrich advanced in singles before teaming with junior Ben Foran to advance in doubles at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Small College Championships.

The four day tournament is being held at The Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.

Battling junior Adam Krull from Trinity University, Heinrich took the first set 6-3 before falling in the second by the same score. After being down 2-1 in the third, Heinrich rallied to go up 3-2 and held on to the lead the rest of the way to take the set 6-3 and the match.

Heinrich continued the momentum once doubles started while teaming with Foran against Gustavus Adolphus College's senior Al-Houni Motasem and sophomore Andres Saenz. The Stevens duo took control of the first set early with a 4-1 lead before taking it 6-2, then cruised in the second en route to a 6-1 win to take the match.

"Today was a great day for Stevens Tennis," head coach Steve Gachko said. "To go 2-0 with wins in singles and doubles against the top eight players in the country right now really shows what our guys are capable of. Matt pulled out a great third set win against a very good player from Trinity. He [Heinrich] really dug deep in the third set and picked up his level of play at the right time to close it out. In doubles, Matt and Ben played at a very high level from start to finish. They never really let Gustavus into the match."

Third seeded Heinrich will continue his run toward an ITA National Championship in singles tomorrow with an 8:30 a.m. match against No. 2 seeded Johns Hopkins sophomore Michael Buxbaun. In doubles, Heinrich and Foran will battle senior Connor Hudson and freshman Kalyan Chadalavasa from Pomona-Pitzer College at 1 p.m.
