Stevens Takes Second at NYU Fall Invite; Ducks Take Top Spot in Four Events

NEW YORK, N.Y. (November 8, 2014)
– The Stevens Institute of Technology men's swimming team placed second at the New York University Fall Invitational, compiling 935 points at the two-day meet.

Coming into the second day of action, the Ducks maintained their placement and swam well. NYU placed first with 1,045 points, Stevens was second with 935 as SUNY New Paltz and Arcadia finished third and fourth.
 
"Our guys swam extremely well," said Head Coach Brad Thornton. "I am pleased with the performance and I think they are beginning to see the rewards from a lot of hard work."
 
Junior Ravi Sun, junior Joshua Lefeber, senior Jack Rees and freshman Ethan Gehenio opened the Day 2 action by earning 34 points in the 200-yard medley relay, teaming for a time of 1:35.49. Lefeber, Sun and senior Price Hu all placed in the top-eight of the 400-IM. Lefeber was second with a 4:12.03, Sun was fourth with a 4:13.10 and Hu was sixth at 4:22.06 as the group picked up 45 team points.
 
Sophomore Austen Young and his 52.13 in the 100-yard butterfly was good for third place, while Rees (53.29) and freshman Brennan Maxwell (54.02) were sixth and eighth.
 
Junior Tomasz Wolinski carded the Ducks' first Day 2 victory with a 1:43.91 in the 200-yard freestyle, picking up 20 team points in the process. Senior Alex Xu was third (1:45.84), sophomore William Arnott – who had an all-around breakout meet – was fifth, rookie James Betz was sixth and sophomore Mark Lippert was seventh.
 
Freshman David Duque was third in the 100-yard breaststroke to pace the Ducks. His 1:00.28 earned the team 15 points and he was joined in the top-eight by sophomore Alex Chen and junior Dane Pilcher who placed seventh and eighth for 25 points.
 
Stevens' second win of the day came in the 100-yard backstroke as Sun clocked a 52.06 to earn the top spot. Gehenio was fifth and Young was sixth with times of 53.18 and 54.90, respectively.The 800-yard freestyle relay was next, and the team of Xu, Wolinski, Arnott and Duque combined for a time of 7:07.05 and second place (34 team points).
 
Freshman Connor Harrigan was second in the mile swim (1,650-free), touching the wall at 16:31.26 and picking up 17 points. Lippert took fourth (16:55.45).
 
Sun's second win of the day and third overall for Stevens came in the 200-yard backstroke. The junior carded a 1:52.30 and picked up 20 team points, and he was followed by Gehenio in second (1:56.21) and Young in seventh (2:02.14). Wolinski was third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.61, with Xu taking fifth and Lefeber sixth.
 
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Chen was Stevens' top finisher, earning fifth place with his 2:14.57, while Pilcher placed seventh thanks to a 2:18.33.
 
The Ducks' fourth victory of the afternoon came from Hu who carded a 1:55.48 in the 200-yard butterfly. Arnott was fourth (1:59.44) as the duo brought in 35 team points.
 
Stevens closed the two-day, three-session meet with a second in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Gehenio, Xu, Lefeber and Wolinski put together a 3:10.01.
 
The Ducks will now begin resting for the three-day Franklin & Marshall College Invitational slated to run November 21, 22 and 23 in Lancaster, Pa.
 
"We are looking forward to the F&M Invitational in a couple weeks," added Thornton. "We are going to make sure everyone is rested and performing at a high level in hopes of qualifying as many guys as we can as early as possible for the NCAA Championships. It should be fun."
