Geyer and Caruso Lead Stevens to Second Place at NYU Fall Invite

NEW YORK, N.Y. (November 8, 2014)
– Senior Brittany Geyer and sophomore Danielle Caruso each won two events to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's swimming team to a second-place finish at the New York University Fall Invitational.

The Ducks totaled 836 points, and ended behind host NYU which had 1,064. SUNY New Paltz and Arcadia were in the third and fourth, respectively.
 
Freshman Sarah Jurczyk, Geyer, senior Maria McClure and senior April Lawson finished third in the 200-yard medley relay (1:53.24), with Geyer coming right back for a first place in the 400-yard individual medley via a 4:41.78. Junior Elizabeth Heinbach was second in the 400-IM with a 4:43.14, with rookie Kaitlynn Prescott placing fifth.
 
Senior Sharon Rooker was the Ducks' top finisher in the 100-yard butterfly, earning 15 team points by taking fourth (1:01.30), and she was followed in the top-eight by McClure who placed seventh with a time of 1:02.12.
 
Caruso accounted for Stevens' second win of the day, taking the No. 1 in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.73 and picking up 20 team points. Freshman Meghan Randle was eighth in the 200-free, touching at 2:03.50.
 
Geyer picked up a second in the 100-yard breaststroke thanks to a 1:07.94, and Lawson was seventh. The duo combined for 29 team tallies. Freshman Sarah Hoogenboom and Rooker went three-five in the 100-yard backstroke with times of 1:01.85 and 1:02.22, while the team of Randle, senior Nicole Miller, Geyer and Caruso picked up 34 points by taking second place in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
 
Caruso won the 1,650-yard freestyle by more than 14 seconds, turning in a 17:49.84 and earning 20 team points. Heinbach followed in third (18:14.84) in the mile swim.
 
Hoogenboom backed up her third in the 100-back with a third in the 200-back (2:13.31), and McClure mirrored her finish in the 100 as well, taking fifth in the '2' with a time of 2:15.87.
 
Lawson led Stevens in the 100-yard freestyle, placing sixth with a time of 55.11, and Geyer's second win of the day came in the 200-yard breaststroke on the back of a 2:26.12, almost three full seconds better than second  place. Heinbach picked up a second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:14.47), and backing her up was McClure in fourth (2:15.82) and Jurczyk in sixth (2:19.11).
 
Closing the two-day, three-session meet was the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Lawson, Rooker, Miller and Caruso. That group teamed to take second place and 34 points with a time of 3:43.41.
 
"We are looking forward to the F&M Invitational in a couple weeks," said Head Coach Brad Thornton. "We are going to make sure everyone is rested and performing at a high level in hopes of qualifying as many swimmers as possible as early as possible for the NCAA national meet in March.
