NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (November 15, 2014) – The No. 20 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team used a balanced scoring attack Saturday to lead them to a 3-0 win over No. 18 Montclair State University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
With the win, the Ducks (14-3-2) will face either Christopher Newport University or Lynchburg College in tomorrow's second round.
Both teams traded shots and possession over the first 20 minutes to start the game before the Ducks took advantage of a Montclair miscue in minute 21. Off a shot heading wide right, the ball deflected off a Red Hawk defender and into the goal to give Stevens a 1-0 lead.
From there, the Ducks defense went to work defending the goal, blocking a shot in the 21
st minute before recording a team save in the 28
th. Those shots would be the only chance Montclair St. had for the remainder of the half as Stevens took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Despite allowing seven shots in the half, the Ducks defense didn't allow any to reach sophomore keeper
Mike Renna.
The Ducks kept up the offensive pressure once the second half started with four shots over the first 10 minutes. After two more unanswered shots over the next five minutes, Stevens was rewarded in the 61
st with a goal.
Off a set piece pass from junior
Harrison Kane, sophomore
Patrick Masur connected with the right side of the net for the score. The assist was Kane's second of the season while the goal was Masur's third.
The Stevens defense went to work from there, limiting Montclair to just one shot over the eight minutes which sailed high, allowing Stevens to pad its lead even more.
Off a pass from junior
Colin Phillips in the 83
rd minute, senior
Kevin Calloway fired a shot from the right side into the left corner for his fifth goal of the season. The lead held up from there as Stevens came away with the 3-0 win.
Mike Renna made two saves in his ninth shutout of the season.
Tomorrow's match time is set for 5 p.m.
