NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (November 16, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team surrendered four second half goals Sunday in a 4-2 loss to Christopher Newport University in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The loss ends Stevens' season at 14-4-2.

The Ducks came out with a good scoring chance in the first minute with a shot from junior Joe Cellitti that bounced off the post. Defense took over after that before the Ducks broke through in the 19th minute.

Off a pass from junior Carson Pryor, Cellitti gained control of the ball in the middle of the box and beat the goalie for the score. The goal was the eighth of the season for Cellitti.

Not satisfied, the Ducks added to their lead two minutes later with a goal from Pryor. Off a pass from freshman Tommy Dorsay, Pryor connected on a one-timer into the top right of the net.

Defense took over again for both teams after that as neither side surrendered a shot on goal for the rest of the half.

Coming out of the break, the Captains controlled the offense, scoring quickly in the 54th minute. Off an across the box pass, senior Alex Makumbi headed the ball off the crossbar and into the goal. Another Christopher Newport shot four minutes later was blocked, but the Captains followed with a goal less than a minute after.

Off a corner kick in the 58th minute, sophomore Patrick Burns sent one past sophomore keeper Mike Renna for the game tying score. The Ducks responded with shots in the 60th and 64th minutes, but both went high to keep the game tied.

Both teams battled for possession for the next 15 minutes before the Captains got the go-ahead goal in the 73rd minute off a center of the box shot. The Ducks struggled to return the score, allowing Christopher Newport to pad the lead in the 88th minute with a goal. The deficit was too much for Stevens to overcome.

Renna made three saves in what was just his fourth loss of the season.

The loss ends a Stevens season that saw the Ducks record double digits wins for the 13th consecutive season, win an eighth consecutive Empire 8 Conference, and advance to a 12th consecutive NCAA Tournament.
