Hawks Drop Meet at RPI

TROY, NY – Teams from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute defeated Hartwick's men's and women's swimming and diving teams on Sunday afternoon. The men lost by a count of 163-131. The Hawks fall to 5-2 in dual meets this season. The 'Wick women fell by a 193-99 margin to the Engineers. The Hawks are now 3-4.
           
The men's team won nine events with Miles Blaney (New York, NY/NYC Lab School), Brendan Quinn (Raleigh, NC/Heritage), and Matt Plunkett (Cooper City, FL/Cooper City) each picked up two victories. Blaney won the 100 freestyle (48.13) and 200 freestyle (1:46.57) for the Hawks. Quinn swept the distance events, taking the 500 free (5:00.64) and 1000 free (10:14.73). Plunkett was first in the 100 back (54.63) and 200 back (1:56.64) events.
           
Victories were also recorded by Ben Detar (Charleston, SC/Hanahan) and Luis Santiesteban (Key Largo, FL/Coral Shores). Detar won the 200 fly (1:58.41) and Santiesteban touched up first in the 200 IM (2:00.93). Joe Mulvehill (Penfield, NY/Penfield), Brian Edmister III (Belmont, NY/Genesee Valley), Plunkett, and Blaney also won the 200 free relay in 1:28.86.
           
Gwen Mathias (Sunland, CA/Southwestern Academy) and Imma Rutigliano (Tillson, NY/John A. Coleman) earned victories on the women's side. Mathias was first in the 1000 free (11:11.28) with Rutigliano taking the 200 IM (2:14.37). Rutigliano also secured a pair of second-place swims in the 200 free and 500 free.
             
Kaitlyn Campbell (Bartlett, IL/Glenbard North), Helen Merkley (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland), and Ally Agate (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) also swam to second-place finishes at the meet. Campbell was second in the 200 fly, Merkley was runner-up in the 200 back, and Agate was second in the 100 back.
           
Both Hartwick teams are off until next Saturday. The Hawks travel to Clinton, NY for a quad-meet hosted by Hamilton College. Ithaca and Geneseo will also compete.
