Cardinals, Ducks and Golden Flyers Soar to Victory
ST. JOHN FISHER 62, Cal-Lutheran 58
The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season, all the way on the west coast, defeating California Lutheran 62-58 in Santa Cruz, California on Sunday.
With the win the Cardinals improve to 1-1 overall, while the Regals fall to 0-1.
It was a game in which Fisher saw Sydney Bloomstein, Mary Kate Cusack and Portia Velasco each pour in 13 points apiece.
Fisher held a slight advantage 33-32 at the half.
The Cardinals benefited from a strong defensive outing in which Fisher picked up 13 steals. Velasco tallied a game-high four steals, while Bloomstein, Cusack and Emily Piacentini each notched three apiece. Fisher finished with a 27-7 advantage in points off turnovers in the game.
Claire Walsh and Brooke Seavitt each poured in five points for the Cardinals.
NAZARETH 66, Brockport 56
Nazareth came from behind to defeat the College at Brockport 66-56 in the Golden Eagle Tip-Off Tournament. Nazareth is now 2-0 while Brockport falls to 1-1.
The Golden Eagles led the entire first half and by as much as 10 points at 7:58 when they led 20-10. Brockport finished the first half with a 30-26 lead.
Samantha Peebles came off the bench for Nazareth and scored 11 first-half points going a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc.
In the second half Nazareth tied the score at 32-all off a
Hannah Runyon three-pointer at 17:50.
Sam Sorge scored a three-pointer at 16:22 to give Nazareth its first lead of the game 35-32.
Brockport took the lead back, 36-35, off a pair of free-throws at 13:44.
Nazareth went on a 13-1 run starting with Runyon scoring a three-pointer at 8:31 to tie the game at 45-45. The Golden Flyers then regained the lead, 47-45, at 7:42 off a Sorge layup. Nazareth continued to build on its lead going up by nine points, 55-46, and never looked back.
Nazareth had four players score in double digits with Sorge leading the way with 17 points going 5-of-9 from behind the arc.
Lindsey Kelly had 14, Peebles 11, and Runyon 10.
Melissa Reeves led Nazareth with seven rebounds and five assists before fouling out of the game.
Nazareth shot 44% from behind the arc for the game and had a 45-39 advantage in rebounds.

STEVENS 63, Arcadia 54
Behind an 18 point, eight rebound performance from junior
Kaitlyn Astel, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team picked up a 63-54 win over Arcadia Univeristy Sunday in the DeSales Tip Off.
The win evens Stevens' record at 1-1 while Arcadia dropped to 0-2.
The Ducks raced out to an early 7-1 lead thanks to a pair of field goals from Astel and a three pointer from sophomore
Daphne Ginn. Arcadia came back with an 11-0 run to take the lead, but a three from sophomore
Erica Guketlov with seven and a half minutes left in the half knotted the game at 14.
The game turned into a back-and-forth battle for the next four minutes with neither team able to get up by more than three until the two minute mark.
After Astel's layup made it 22-19, junior
Miranda Ripken followed with a layup of her own to make it 24-19. Aracadia answered with a 5-0 run to tie the score, but Astel's jumper with just under a minute remaining gave the Ducks the two point edge they would take into the break.
Stevens came out hot to start the second half with an 8-0 run led by four points from sophomore
Hannah Brophy. Arcadia responded with four unanswered, but a Ripken jumper followed by a Brophy layup extended the Ducks lead back to 10.
The Ducks offense continued to pour it on over the next several minutes before Astel hit jumpers on back-to-back possessions to make it 51-34 midway through the half.
Arcadia answered again and made it a six point game with just under four minutes remaining, but a Guketlov three followed by an Astel jumper ballooned the lead back to 11. From there, the Ducks held off another late Acardia rally to hold on for the 63-54 win.
Astel's 18 points led all scorers while junior
Dylan Krause led the Ducks with 12 rebounds. For the second straight day, the Ducks outrebounded their opposition, this time by a 43-37 margin.
