Naz, Houghton and Stevens Win Once

HARTWICK
'Wick volleyball won both of its matches on Saturday to finish 2-2 at the SUNY Oneonta Dig Pink Invitational. The Hawks defeated Bard College (25-21, 25-18, 25-17) and Plattsburgh State (26-24, 25-20, 22-25, 25-17) to get to the 10-win mark for the season.
           
Hartwick won in straight sets against the Raptors in its opening match. 
           
Freshman Kayla Baril earned a double-double with match-highs of 12 kills and 17 digs. Sophomore Quincy Kinzel dished out 30 assists and added seven digs and four aces for 'Wick. Sophomore Alyssa Zeitler contributed 11 digs.
           
Sophomore Hannah Armstrong registered nine kills and eight digs and freshman Ashley Werner secured six digs and a match-high five aces.
           
Baril recorded another double-double against the Cardinals in the Hawks' second match. She had 10 kills and 10 digs.
           
Hartwick would edge Plattsburgh in the first set by two points. The Hawks took a 2-0 advantage but the Cardinals responded in the third set to trim the margin to 2-1. But 'Wick pulled away in the fourth to earn the victory in the team's season finale.
           
Junior Mary Beth DeCuyke was in double figures in kills with 12. Kinzel also had a double-double for 'Wick with 37 assists and she tied for a team-best with 15 digs.
           
Armstrong would notch 15 digs, nine kills, and four aces. Werner and Zeitler added 13 and 10 digs, respectively. Freshman Rosa Maun contributed seven kills.
           

ITHACA
The Ithaca College volleyball team won both of its matches on Saturday and claimed the championship of the Oneonta Dig Pink Invitational. The Bombers defeated Baruch and Hunter in straight 3-0 sets. 

Ithaca 3, Baruch 0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-18)
Rylie Bean led Ithaca with 15 kills and Gromen had 37 assists in the three-set win. Carly Gromen also served two aces and had eight digs. Maggie Mutschler led Ithaca with 15 digs. Katie Hartman had a solo block and block assist.

Ithaca 3, Hunter 0 (25-23, 25-29, 26-24)
Mutschler had 19 digs for Ithaca and Myan Idziur had eight digs. Joelle Goldstein and Bean had 10 kills each for Ithaca, and capitalized on the service from Gromen, who totaled 30 assists. Bean added two solo blocks and one block assist.


NAZARETH
Nazareth won its third women's volleyball match of the weekend Saturday morning as the Golden Flyers disposed of Montclair State in four sets. Scores were 25-21, 21-25, 25-13, 25-14. 

The Golden Flyers improved to 25-9 overall as they competed in the New York State Regional Challenge at Stevens. Their weekend, however, came to a premature end Saturday as their scheduled match against Rowan was canceled due a leak in the roof of Stevens' auxiliary gymnasium where the match was to be played. Montclair State dropped to 23-9.

Senior Maria Allocco had a match-high 13 kills in 22 attack attempts for a .455 hitting percentage to go with seven blocks and sophomore Madi Wickens had 25 assists and five of the Golden Flyers' 13 service aces. Senior Kassandra Buseck added 11 kills and sophomore Maureen Thayer had 14 digs.

Nazareth was behind 21-19 in the opening set before rallying to score the final six points. Allocco had two kills and teamed with junior Jennifer Hicks on a pair of blocks to help seal the set.

Montclair State turned the tables in the second set by rallying from a 20-18 deficit to score seven of the last eight points. Nazareth then dominated sets three and four with Allocco totaling five kills while Buseck and Olivia Harrigan had four each. Sophomore Rachel Williamson came in to record eight assists and a pair of service aces.


HOUGHTON
Houghton volleyball lost to Buffalo State, 3-1, and knocked off Alfred University by the same score to split two matches on day two of the Highlander Invitational on Saturday in the Nielsen Center.

The Highlanders started the day losing to Buffalo State (21-25, 16-25, 25-23, 19-25). Hattie Burgher finished with 14 kills and 16 digs. Laurel Wroblicky added 31 digs, while Anna Coryell chipped in with 31 assists and 12 digs.

Houghton wrapped up the tournament with a win over Alfred (25-7, 26-28, 25-8, 25-10). Naomi Prentice led the attack with 16 kills and added five blocks, defensively. Burgher added 11 kills and eight digs and Coryell had 34 assists and 10 digs. Wroblicky finished with 19 digs.

Wroblicky and Burgher earned all-tournament honors.


STEVENS
The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team split its matches for the second-straight day at the NYS Regional Challenge on Saturday in Canavan Arena.

Stevens (29-6) began the day with a five-set loss to the University of Rochester but bounced back to sweep Montclair State University in the nightcap.
 
Rochester 3, Stevens 2
Stevens suffered its first back-to-back losses of the season with a five-set defeat to the University of Rochester in the Ducks' first match of the day. The Ducks alternated set wins with Rochester throughout the five-set contest, 25-15, 17-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-13.
 
The Ducks compiled 54 kills with a .266 hitting percentage, compared to 51 kills and a .171 clip from the Yellow Jackets. A deciding factor in the match came by way of serving and receiving errors, as Stevens committed 24 and Rochester just 13.
 
Junior Annemarie Thomas led the Ducks in kills with 13 on 22 swings for an impressive .591 hitting percentage, which was a match-high. Thomas also added three blocks.
 
Classmate Becca Youngman swung at a .435 clip with 10 kills and no errors, while sophomore Christina Sciarra also notched 10 kills and hit .320. Youngman added four digs, while Sciarra chipped in nine digs.
 
Another junior, Catie Shelton handed out 40 assists to go along with five digs and two aces, while freshman Sydni Horner established a match-best with 25 digs.
 
Senior Katie Hall added seven kills, four aces, four blocks and two digs, while junior Kristen Herchenroder registered 10 digs and six kills.
 
Freshman Brianna Evans finished the match with six kills, four digs and three blocks. Senior Ashley Castillo handed out nine assists in a set played.
 
Stevens 3, Montclair State 0
The Ducks took complete control of the match against Montclair right from first serve and cruised to a straight-sets victory, 25-19, 25-17, 25-11, to snap their two-match losing streak.

Stevens hit .333 in the contest on 46 kills and 11 errors in 105 attempts. The Ducks also notched seven total blocks (six assists, four solo). Montclair was held to a .070 hitting percentage, and only hit above .100 in one set.

Shelton dished out 40 more assists against the Red Hawks to maneuver the offense. Tobin led the way with 13 kills to go along with six digs, while Evans hit .455 with 12 kills on 22 swings. She also added six digs.

Thomas continued her stellar play on Saturday with seven kills and two solo blocks. Sciarra chipped in eight kills with four digs and two blocks.

Hall rounded out the match with six kills and a .333 hitting percentage with three blocks. Horner tallied 14 digs defensively.


UTICA
The Utica College volleyball team fell in its season finale at the Houghton Tournament Saturday as it dropped both matches to SUNY Cortland and Buffalo State by scores of 3-0. 
 
Freshman Samantha Hoerning led the Pioneers in the opening game as she tallied eight kills.  Senior Briona Enny  and junior Lora Allen combined for 17 digs, while freshmanAlaina Wickwire tallied seven digs.  Allen also added 12 assists on the outing. 
 
In the second match, junior Laura Homer-Gunther  tallied a team-high seven kills.  Once again, Briona Enny led the team in digs (13), while Lora Allen recorded 10 digs and added 15 assists.  Sophomore Brandi Blaszak  totaled four kills and added four total blocks while Samantha Hoerning (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East) also had four blocks.


ALFRED
The Alfred University women's volleyball team ended their season with a pair of losses to SUNY Cortland and Houghton College during the final day of the Highlanders' two-day tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Saxons dropped the early match to the Red Dragons of Cortland 3-1 with set scores of 25-23, 21-25, 10-25, 18-25 and then fell to the host Highlanders 3-1 with scores of 7-25, 28-26, 8-25, 10-25. The two losses give the Saxons an overall 2014 season record of 5-26 and they finish 1-7 in the Empire 8.

Mary Lou Patnaude finished the day with 18 kills as she led the Saxons. She also tacked on 18 digs and four block assists. Heather D'Andrea also had double digit kills for the day, compiling 11 against the Red Dragons and adding five on the day's finale. She also had five aces and 26 digs between the two matches.

Aubrey Totsline recorded 57 assists, 14 digs and four aces. Chelsea Pietrzykowski went up for seven dig assists against Houghton after recording two in the early match.


ELMIRA
Third-year setter Sami Hanes '16 of the Elmira College women's volleyball team recorded her 2,000th career assist as the Soaring Eagles dropped a pair of matches at the New York State Regional Challenge. Hanes' 55 assists today increases her career total to 2,014, making her just the seventh player in Elmira College history to record 2,000 or more career assists.
 
In a rematch of last year's ECAC Metro-Upstate Tournament final, Elmira came out on the wrong end of a 3-1 decision to Kean (25-14, 23-25, 25-16, 26-24).  Elmira split the opening sets but fell in the final two despite holding a hefty lead in the fourth set.  Kierstin Derr '16 led EC with 11 kills while Hanes finished with 32 assists. 

Elmira fell in their regular season finale to the University of Rochester in three sets (25-19, 25-21, 25-20).  The Soaring Eagles did not have any players with double-digit kills but still managed to produce 29 kills, including Amanda Blinkinsop '16 who led EC with eight. Hanes finished with 23 assists, her ninth assist being career 2,000th, an assist that came on a kill by Kelsey Ross '16 at 5-4 in the second set.


ST. JOHN FISHER
The St. John Fisher College volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Saturday at a tri-match hosted by Geneseo. Fisher posts an 11-21 overall record as the Cardinals closed out their regular season.

The Cardinals and the host Knights were evenly matched in the first set, going back and forth until both squads were tied at 22 apiece.  Fisher then took three straight points -- two errors and one kill -- to win the first set 25-22.
 
Geneseo, however, bounced right back to decisively take the second set 25-16. The Knights maintained their momentum to win the match with consecutive wins in the third set 25-11.
 
The Cardinals put up a good fight in the fourth set. Down 11-3, Fisher went on a 10-2 run to tie the set at 13 apiece. Geneseo, though, went to win it all, taking the fourth set 25-19.
 
Anna Marcy led the Cardinals with a team-best 10 kills and 11 assists with 15 digs and five blocks. Madison Karwas added nine kills and 11 digs.
 
Katie Mazierski led the defense with a team-best 16 digs and Paige Willson added five blocks.
 
Hiram 3, Fisher 0
Hiram College swept the Cardinals in straight sets 25-15, 25-10, 25-9.
 
Marcy added to her day total with two kills, 10 assists and six digs. Megan Miller tallied four kills and Willson added three.
 
Mazierski led the defense once again with 10 digs.
