ITHACA 80, John Jay 40
The Ithaca College women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the early season with an 8-40 victory over John Jay College on Friday afternoon at the Messiah Tip-Off Classic in Grantham, Pa.
Ithaca led from the opening tap after senior
Ali Ricchiuti put the Bombers ahead on a three-pointer just 59 seconds into the contest, and never relinquished that advantage for all 40 minutes of play. The Bombers led by 13 points at the half, 37-24, and would outscore John Jay, 43-16, in the second half to account for the 40-point victory.
The Bombers shot 47-percent from the field on 31-of-66, and went 7-for-20 from three-point range. They also made 11-of-17 attempts at the free throw line. Ithaca scored nearly half of its points off turnovers with 35 and pulled down 17 of its 43 rebounds on the offensive end, which led to 42 points in the paint.
Defensively, Ithaca held John Jay to 34.8-percent from the floor in the game and just 23.1-percent in the second half (6-for-26) after the Bloodhounds went 10-for-20 in the first half.
Senior
Geena Brady led all scorers with 20 points on 8-for-9 shooting (4-for-5 from the line) to go along with five rebounds. Classmate
Samantha Klie filled the stat sheet with eight points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals. Klie went 3-for-4 in the contest and made both three-point attempts.
Ricchiuti tallied 11 points for the Bombers and added four rebounds and four assists, while senior
Francesca Cotrupe and junior
Keri Steele each posted 10 points apiece. Cotrupe paced Ithaca with eight rebounds, while Steele chipped in six rebounds and two assists.
Sophomores
Erin Ferguson and
Shayna Gaskins both notched six points in the win, and freshman
Jordan Beers added five points. Ferguson also grabbed four rebounds, Gaskins added three, and Beers contributed two rebounds and two assists.
ALFRED 68, Keuka 52
The AU women's basketball team earned their first win of the season, 68-52, against Keuka College at the Terry S. Galanis Family Arena Friday evening.
Senior
Emilea Harrison was one rebound away from a double-double on the night, scoring 14 points and adding nine rebounds, five steals, and five assists. With the help of Harrison, the Saxons were able to top the Wolfpack, 68-52.
The beginning of the game was a back-and-forth affair with five lead changes coming in just the first nine minutes. Finally, in the 12
th minute the Saxons were able to take on the lead on an
Amanda Off jumper and AU didn't look back maintaining the lead the remainder of the game.
However, Wolfpack closed out the first half with an 8-2 run against the Saxons and brought the game within striking distance. In the first half the Wolfpack shot 14-32 (43.8%) from the field while hitting 1-3 (33.3%) from long distance. The Saxons returned fire, making 15-33 (45.5%) of their shots and adding three shots from behind the arc.
To start the second period, the game was back to a jostle for the lead, but the Saxons never relinquished their stranglehold. Finally, with 15:09 to go, the Saxons heated up and went on a six minute 13-4 run to break the game open. With the lead securely in hand, the Saxons rode to victory. The final fell in the Saxons favor, 68-52.
Off finished the evening with 19 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Freshman
McKaylee Croll had a break out game adding 13 points to the Saxon total while dishing out four assists. Over the course of the game the Saxons shot 25-57 (43.9%) from the field and 5-15 (33.3%) from three-point range.
