LANCASTER, Pa. (November 23, 2014) – The No. 8 Stevens Institute of Technology women's swimming team won the 2014 Franklin & Marshall College Invitational, holding off Washington & Lee University.
The Ducks finished with a team total of 728. W&L was second with 712 points, and Mount Saint Mary's (Md.) was third as a total of 12 teams competed at the event in Lancaster.
Stevens was strong throughout the entire meet, recording numerous NCAA cut times and meet records.
Prelims
Sophomore
Danielle Caruso started well for Stevens with an F&M Invitational record-time of 4:59.37, followed in fifth place by junior
Katlyn Christenson. Senior
Maria McClure and freshman
Sarah Hoogenboom were third and fifth in the 200-yard backstroke to lead the Ducks in that event, and senior
April Lawson and junior
Jennifer Rutledge were third and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle.
Geyer placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke, followed by Lawson in sixth and freshman Kaitlyn Christenson in eighth, while Heinbach went first in the 200-yard butterfly. Freshman
Sarah Jurczyk was fourth.
Closing out the fourth session was Geyer winning the 200-yard individual medley, with Christenson and senior
Sharon Rooker checking in third and eighth.
Finals
Caruso re-broke her meet record with a 4:58.16 in the 500-free, winning the event. Christenson was eighth as the pair of Ducks combined for 31 team points. McClure and Hoogenboom were third and fifth in the 200-back final, clocking times of 2:09.94 and 2:10.41.
Lawson's 54.26 and Rutledge's 54.42 were good for 26 team points and fifth and seventh place in the 100-free, while Geyer notched an NCAA B-cut and new meet record with a 1:04.23 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Prescott and Lawson took seventh and eighth as the group brought home 43 team markers in the one event.
Heinbach just missed a B-cut in placing second in the 200-fly final, clocking a 2:08.95, and Jurczyk was fifth with a 2:12.09. Geyer picked up another team and individual victory, taking the top spot in the 200-yard individual medley behind a time of 2:09.27. Rooker and Christenson were seventh and eighth, respectively in another nice event for the Ducks.
After the 200-IM, Stevens was up 674-656 on W&L, still needing a strong performance in the final event of the meet – the 400-yard freestyle relay. In that event, Caruso, senior
Nicole Miller, Rutledge and Lawson took first place with a 3:33.07, bringing in 40 points. W&L took fourth and sixth, and the Ducks' second team placed 10th (14 points) to seal the victory.
