Victories for Alfred, Elmira and Stevens
ALFRED 69, Penn College 59
The Saxons women's basketball team topped the Penn College Wildcats, 69-59, Tuesday evening, earning their second win on the young season.
Though both teams were tied in points off turnovers and points in the paint (20 and 32, respectively) the Saxons were able to mount a ten-point victory over Penn College.
Emilea Harrison scored 15 points while adding six assists and four steals, leading the Saxons to their second win in as many games.
In the opening seven minutes of the game the Saxons were able to dominate the game, going on a 20-4 run. Most points throughout the run came from within the paint from various Saxon players. The Saxons didn't slow down following the run either, only allowing the Wildcats to get within nine points throughout the remainder of the half.
As both teams headed to the locker rooms for the intermission, AU was on top, 39-24. During the first half, AU shot 17-41 (41.5%) from the field and made 2-2 free throws. The Wildcats struggled significantly against the tenacious Saxon defense, only shooting 9 of 39 (23.1%) from the field and 0 of 3 from behind the arc.
When the Saxons came out in the second half they added to their already impressive lead with an 11-2 run in the opening five minutes to take a 24-point lead. Sophomore
Amanda Off and junior
Sarah Kichman were integral in the run adding nine of the 11 points. Kichman drained a three to end the run for the Saxons.
With 3:50 left to go, the Wildcats attempted to claw their way back with a late push, bringing the game within nine points again, however the Saxons capitalized on their free-throws in the closing minutes to keep the game out of reach. The Saxons closed out the game with another victory, 69-59.
Over the course of the game the Saxons shot 27 of 72 (37.5%) from the field, making 5 of 18 three-pointers, and 10 of 18 (58.8%) free throws.
ELMIRA 63, Hilbert 58
Three players turned in double-digit point performances to lead the Elmira College women's basketball team to a 63-58 road win over non-conference opponent Hilbert College. Elmira's
Karli Pochkar '16 led all scorers with 15 points.
As the final score indicates, tonight's game was a close one. Neither team took a commanding lead in the first half as the largest lead was held by the Hawks of Hilbert, a six point lead, midway through the first half.
Trailing 18-12, the Soaring Eagles would use a 13-to-4 run to take a 25-22 lead with 4:28 to play in the half. Elmira's shooting behind the arc was a major factor in the run as the Purple and Gold knocked down three three-pointers, one by
Danielle Cleary '18 and two by
Kelsey Geisler '15. The Soaring Eagles would ride that momentum into halftime as the Elmira women took a 32-29 lead into the break.
Pochkar paced the Soaring Eagles in the first half with eight points and six rebounds. Classmate
Meghan Loya '16 was held to just two points, but her effort on the boards helped Elmira maintain their lead as she pulled down 10 first half rebounds, seven defensive and three offensive.
In the second half, the game stayed up for grabs for a good portion as six lead changes occurred in the first 6:50 of the half. However, at the 13:10 mark, the Soaring Eagles would piece together a mini 8-0 run to take a 50-43 lead. Similar to their run in the first half, this one was also fueled by Elmira's three-point shooting as a pair of threes from
Makinsey Carolus '18 and
Allie Olsen '16 put EC ahead by seven.
Elmira's mini 8-0 run would eventually turn into an 11-1 run and a 53-44 lead at the 10:41 mark of the half. EC's nine point lead looked like it would be enough to see them through to the finish line but the Hawks had a run of their own, a 14-to-7 one that spanned 8:11 that cut the Elmira lead to 60-58 with 2:30 left to play in regulation.
From the 2:30 mark, both teams would struggle shooting the ball as neither team was able to make a field goal. The Hawks would resort to fouling late in the game, sending Cleary to the line but the rookie proved to be up for the challenge as she calmly drained both attempts to put EC ahead by four with 29 seconds to play.
Nine seconds later, Elmira would commit a foul of their own, sending Hilbert's Amber Hay to the charity stripe for a pair of shots. Hay would miss both attempts, and would be forced to commit a foul to stop the clock, sending Loya to the foul line where she would make one-of-two foul shots, sealing Elmira's 63-58 victory.
Pochkar led the charge for Elmira with 15 points, tying a career-high for the third year forward, and was one rebound shy of a double-double as she pulled down nine boards. Pochkar was one of three Soaring Eagles to put up double figures in the point department as Geisler and Cleary scored 13 and 10 points, respectively. Loya also had a noteworthy game as she registered five points and 14 rebounds.
STEVENS 82, Centenary 58
Twelve different players on the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team scored Tuesday night as the Ducks cruised to an 82-58 over Centenary College in Canavan Arena.
The win was the third straight for the Ducks as their record moved to 3-1 while Centenary fell to 1-4.
Sophomore
Brittany Washington led the Ducks in scoring with 13 points while sophomore
Daphne Ginn added 10. Junior
Dylan Krause led with 10 rebounds and sophomore

As a team, the Ducks shot 44.6 percent from the field and outrebounded the Cyclones 43-35.
The Ducks opened on an 8-3 run led by four points from sophomore
Hannah Brophy. The Cyclones answered with an 8-0 run to take a three point lead, but Stevens responded with a 9-0 run to take an 17-11 lead midway through the half.
From there, both teams tussled in a back-and-forth affair before the Ducks built their double-digit lead. A jumper from sophomore
Daphne Ginn made it 21-17 before a pair of free throws from Washington with six and half remaining made it 25-21. A Centenary jumper cut the lead back to two, but three free throws combined from Ginn and Washington extended the Stevens lead to seven.
Centenary showed some resistance to the Ducks run, but free throws from junior
Miranda Ripken combined with a layup from Washington with under a minute and a half remaining gave the Ducks the 42-32 lead they would take into halftime. The Ducks shot 42.4 percent from the field in the half and built their lead despite not connecting on any three-pointers.
The second half was all Stevens as a layup from Washington following by a three from Guketlov opened up a 53-35 lead five minutes in. Centenary battled back with a 5-0 run, but that's as close as they would get the rest of the night.
Ginn Extended the lead to 19 midway through the half with a three before connecting on another less than two minutes later to give Stevens a 66-44 lead. Petuskey and Guketlov continued the momentum with jumpers on back-to- back possessions during the five minute mark followed four minutes later by a jumper from Stoddard to give Stevens a 23 point lead.
Freshman
Sydney Darby concluded the Ducks scoring with a layup with under 40 seconds to go before the Ducks ran out the clock to clinch the win.
