Three Named to NSCAA All-East Region Teams
All-East Region Team
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) released the 2014 Men's Soccer All-East region teams, selecting three Empire 8 Athletic Conference athletes .
Alfred senior defender
Jeff Thomas was named to the First Team, Utica senior forward
Shane Ruffing garnered Second Team and Houghton senior midfielder
Jared Toth was given Third Team honors.
Thomas started 19 games for the Saxons, filling multiple positions of importance. He led the team in goals (eight) and points (19) while posting three assists, good for second best on the team. The Saxons posted a 9-8-3 record, the first record over .500 for the Saxons since 2006. Addittionaly, Alfred made its first appearance in the E8 Tournament and earned a bid to the ECAC Metro/Upstate Championship Tournament for the first time in eight years.
Ruffing led his squad and the Empire 8 in almost every offensive category. Ruffing wrapped up his final campaign first in the conference in goals (12) and points (28) while second in shots (52), all of which led the team. He opened up the season with 12 points in three games including a hat trick in the opener and wrapped up the regular season with two goals against Alfred earning UC the No. 3 seed in the E8 tourney.
Toth started all 20 games and led the Highlanders with seven goals and created numerous chances for his teammates with his tenacious two-way play in the midfield. The Highlanders finish their season with a record of 9-9-2.
