Balanced Attack Lifts Fisher Over Fredonia State
The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack with four Cardinals scoring in double figures en route to an 89-61 victory of host Fredonia State on Sunday.
After the victory, Fisher improves to 6-2 on the year while Fredonia falls to 2-5.
Mary Kate Cusack went 5-for-9 from 3-point land to score 19 points, while
Bridget Carney matched Cusack's point total to set a new career-high after going 8-for-9 from the floor.
With the score tied at 12-12 seven minutes into the contest, Fisher's
Lunden Cunningham scored buckets on back-to-back possessions to help spur a run for Fisher.
Emily Piacentini drilled a 3-pointer to put the visitors ahead 22-14 midway through the half.
Cusack converted one of her three first half 3-pointers at the 4:23 mark to put Fisher up 34-20. The junior guard paced Fisher with 13 points in the first half.
Carney had a solid first half for the Cardinals as well with 11 points, including giving Fisher its largest first half margin, 41-24, with under three minutes remaining.
Fisher led 46-33 at the break.
The Cardinals held a double-digit lead in the second half until a 3-pointer by the Blue Devils cut the Fisher margin to 55-47 seven minutes into the second half.
However, Fisher responded with a 10-1 run in less than a two minute span to break the game open again, 65-48.
The Blue Devils cut the Fisher lead to 13 points, 65-52, midway through the half however that is as close as they would come.
Portia Velasco notched 14 points and five steals. Cunningham finished with 10 points in just 14 minutes of play.
