Houghton Grabs 3-0 Win in First Game of Pool Play
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Stephany Ellison (Whitesville, NY, Whitesville Central) scored with just over a minute into the game and then added two second half goals to lead #4 Houghton women's soccer to a 3-0 win over #7 Point University in their first game at the NCCAA National Championship Tournament on Tuesday.
It didn't take long for the Highlanders to get on the board in this one, as Ellison took the ball down the left side of the field, dribbled to the top of the box and drilled a shot that found the back of the net. The rest of the half was evenly played, with Houghton holding a 5-2 edge in shots at the break.
The second half was more of the same, as Point (11-6-5) found more opportunities offensively, but couldn't get a shot past keeper
Shawna Sprout (Portville, NY, Portville Central).
Ellison gave the Highlanders some room to breathe with her second goal in the 67th minute and put the game away with her 22nd goal of the season just seven minutes later.
Houghton outshot Point, 13-9. Sprout finished with four saves.
Houghton (10-7-1) will play the second game of pool play on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against #3 Campbellsville University.
