The Empire 8 men's swimming & diving teams completed the final day of competition for the Bomber Invitational Sunday at the A&E Center Aquatics Pavilion.
ITHACA
The Bombers finished third overall out of nine teams, accumulating 897.5 points through 20 events. Cornell took the top spot with a score of 1865.5.
Clement Towner finished just outside of the top-10 in the 1650-yard freestyle in the opening event of the final day. Towner finished 11th out of 21 entries with a time of 17:36.40.
The Bombers placed two in the top-5 of the 100-yard freestyle.
Adam Zelehowsky finished fourth in a time of 46.53 to pace Ithaca in the event.
Logan Metzger touched the wall in 46.66, placing fifth.
Ben Kennedy and
Gregory Markert were the top finishers for Ithaca in the 200-yard backstroke. Kennedy placed 14th in the field of 35, finishing in 1:59.97. Markert completed the race in 2:00.98, placing 15th.
Lucas Zelehowsky paced Ithaca in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing fourth overall in a time of 2:09.60.
James Bowe finished in 2:10.85, earning sixth out of 27 entries.
Aidan Hartswick rounded out the top Ithaca participants with a time of 2:12.96 for 10th place.
The Bombers closed the meet with a second place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Metzger, L. Zelehowsky,
Addison Hebert and A. Zelehowsky finished in a time of 3:07.32, just falling short of Cornell's top time of 3:07.16.
ALFRED
The Alfred University men's swimming and diving team completed the three-day journey at the Ithaca College Invitational in seventh place out of the nine-team field with 604.5 points on Sunday.
During the men's 100 Yard Freestyle, seniors
David Coombes (Dansville, NY/Dansville) and
David Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port) finished in third and sixth with times of 46.33 and 46.72, respectively. Senior
Joseph Rogers (Dublin, NH)
added a 12
th place finish with a time of 47.68 in the event, tying SUNY Geneseo's Jeffrey Doser.
Senior Zachary Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) posted another top individual performance in the 200 Back with a mark of 1:58.03, good enough for eighth place.
The seniors continued the strong showing by the Saxons in the final race of the 40-event weekend. Luke, Rogers, Toth and Coombes combined for a 3:07.36, third place finish in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay.
HARTWICK
The Hartwick men ended up in fourth place at the Ithaca Invitational this weekend.
The men's team finished the event with 735 points. On Sunday, junior
Matt Plunkett had the top finish for the Hawks with a second-place effort in the 200 backstroke. He swam the race in a time of 1:51.52.
Brendan Quinn took third in the 1650 free in 16:41.45. Junior
Matteo Merodio was 11
th in the 200 breast (2:14.00).
Luis Santiesteban,
Brian Edmister III, Plunkett, and
Joe Mulvehill finished sixth in the 4 x 100 free relay. Their time was 3:12.07.
NAZARETH
Junior
Dan Burke excelled for Nazareth Sunday as the Golden Flyers' swimming and diving teams completed the third and final day of competition at the Bomber Invitational. Burke finished first in the 200-yard backstroke as he broke his own school record with a winning time of 1:50.71. He was just a couple of ticks shy of the meet record of 1:50.60, set last year. Burke also set a school record for Nazareth on Saturday in the 400 IM.
Nazareth finished ninth in the men's team standings with 446 points. Division I power Cornell won the team title with 1,865.5 points. In the women's meet, Nazareth placed eighth with 554.5 points. Cornell was first with 1,745.5 points.
Burke also helped Nazareth to an eighth-place finish in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:16.00. Junior
Sean Doyle, sophomore
Matt Leverich and freshman
Gannon Connors also swam in the relay.
Other day three highlights included a fourth-place finish for freshman
Andrew Battaglia in the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:53.86). He was followed to the finish line by Leverich, who placed ninth in 17:19.67. Freshman
Ibrahim Stungurys finished 18th in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.08).
