Elmira Splits In Opening Double Header

Decatur, GA -- The Elmira College softball team (1-1) kicked off their 2014 campaign by splitting a pair of games with Agnes Scott College (1-3) today. The Soaring Eagles fell in the first game 0-1, but regrouped in the second game and defeated the Scotties 9-1.
The first game was a classic pitchers dual as both teams struggled to get on base. Neither team scored until the bottom of the sixth when Alliyah Williams '17, the pitcher for Agnes, hit a home run to take the 1-0 lead over the Soaring Eagles. Williams then closed out the game by not allowing the Purple and Gold to score in the top of the seventh.
Alex Puglisi '14 finished the game with eight strike outs, five hits, one walk and one home run.
Elmira then regrouped in the second game and started the game off with five runs in the first inning.
Jacquelyn Heggie '16 started things off when she singled to third base.
Ashley Palmer '16 then reached on a fielder's choice, advancing Heggie to second base.
Emily Carlin '17 then stepped up to the plate and belted her first career homerun, giving Elmira the early 3-0 lead. With the bases cleared,
Mikayla Bean '14 walked to first and
Megan Anderson '15 advanced her to second after singling to right field.
Emilie Rogers '14 grounded out at first, for the second out of the inning, but advanced the runners to second and third.
Katie Day '16 singled and advanced to second off an error, scoring both Anderson and Bean to increase EC's lead to 5-0. The Scotties cut the Purple and Gold's lead to 5-1 after having runners on second and third and Williams hit a double and recorded one RBI in the bottom of the fourth. The Soaring Eagles scored four more runs in the fifth inning after a single by Anderson batted in a run and advanced runners to second and third. Rodgers then singled up the middle and scored two runs. Later that inning Anderson would score as well to give Elmira the 9-1 lead and forcing the game to end in five innings. Rodgers received her first win of the season by striking out six batters and allowing only four hits. Anderson led offensively with three hits, two runs and one RBI while Carline had three RBI's, two runs and one home run.
The Purple and Gold will return to action this Tuesday, February 18
th, in a double-header against Piedmont College.
