The Ithaca College women's swimming & diving team is first place after the first of four days of competition at the Empire 8 Championships. The Bombers are slightly ahead of Stevens and Hartwick.
A Ducks' swimmer successfully won the 500-freestyle for the sixth straight year. This year it was freshman Danielle Caruso who notched the top time (5:02.45). Nazareth freshman Cameron Hess was second (5:08.73), and defending champion Stevens sophomore Elizabeth Heinbach was third (5:08.86).
Bomber freshman Grace Ayer won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:05.13, which met the NCAA B qualifying standard. Ithaca senior Elizabeth Gawrys placed in the top three for the second straight year with a time of 2:09.40, narrowly beating out Hartwick sophomore Imma Rutigliano (2:09.70).
Ithaca freshman Lake Duffy won the Empire 8 title in the 50 free in 23.96. Stevens sophomore Jenn Rutledge finished as runner-up (24.03) for the second consecutive year and Nazareth senior Emily Sauter placed third (24.14).
The Bombers saved the best for last as Kylie Bangs, Sam Reilly, Gawrys and Cassie Papaleo recorded a time of 1:47.89 in the 200-yard medley relay to close the day. The Bomber edged out Stevens (1:48.00) to snap the Ducks four-year win streak in the event.

The morning session will start at 10 a.m., while the finals will be held in the evening beginning at 6pm.
