Rochester Edges Ithaca In Match Of Regionally-Ranked Women's Tennis Teams

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The visiting University of Rochester captured four of six singles matches to pull out a 5-4 victory over the Ithaca College women's tennis team on Saturday afternoon at Glazer Arena. It was a matchup of regionally-ranked teams by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as Rochester is 12th and Ithaca stands 20th in the Northeast.

The Bombers led 2-1 after the doubles matches. Cristina Nunez (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) and Haley Kusak (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) started things with an 8-2 win at first doubles, and were followed by Alyssa Steinweis (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) and Allison Vizgaitis (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) victory at third doubles by the same 8-2 score. The second-doubles match was close throughout, and Rochester's tandem picked up a 9-7 victory.

In the singles matches, Nunez put a point on the board for the Bombers with a 6-1, 6-2 win at first singles. Rochester won the next four singles matches to be played to clinch the team victory. The sixth singles match went to a third set and a tiebreak was played when that set was knotted at 4-4. Steinweis won 7-5 in the tiebreaker to wrap up the match.

Ithaca returns to action March 2 at St. Lawrence.
