Farmingdale Upends Stevens, 11-8
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (February 26, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology of women's lacrosse team suffered an 11-8 defeat at Farmingdale State College Wednesday afternoon.
With the loss, the Ducks drop to 1-1 overall, while the Rams move to 1-0 on the young season.
Stevens held a 40-24 edge in shots and a 28-18 margin in shots on goal but struggled to find the back of the net throughout the game. The Ducks also ended with a 23-18 advantage in ground balls, winning 12-of-20 draws as well.
Farmingdale had nine more turnovers than Stevens, but freshman goalie
Krista Spanoletta (West Islip, N.Y.) was marvelous in goal, making 20 denials to lead the Rams to a win in their season-opener.
Farmingdale jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind a pair from junior
Nicole Marzocca (North Babylon, N.J.), but the Ducks quickly responded, getting tallies from senior
Kara Rafferty (Bayshore, N.Y.) and sophomore
Erika Wilcox (Baldwinsville, N.Y.).
The hosts responded with a 4-0 run to open a 6-2 margin with 10:28 in the first, with Rafferty's second ending the spurt and pulling the Ducks within three goals (6-3) 14 seconds later.
Two more Farmingdale goals made it 8-3, but Stevens cut it to 8-4 at the break when freshman
Kathleen Kalbian (Cheshire, Conn.) recorded the first marker of her career with 1:34 in the opening period.
Two-straight Wilcox scores made it an 8-6 game with 24:13 to play in regulation, the second thanks to an assist from sophomore
Jaimie Mastrogiacomo (Whitehouse Station, N.J.), but the two-goal deficit was as close as Stevens could get as the Rams scored three of the game's final five goals for the 11-8 win, and refusing to let the Ducks pull within a single strike.
Junior
Andrea Dragoni (Easton, Pa.) and Wilcox put in the final two Stevens goals of the game.
Senior
Sara Prall (Lansdale, Pa.) got the start in goal for the Ducks and made seven saves. Wilcox had four goals, with Rafferty netting a pair. Kalbian led the Ducks with four caused turnovers and six ground balls, and freshman
Betsy Crossland (Westfield, N.J.) had three draws and a pair of ground balls. Wilcox recorded a game-high seven draw controls to go with her four tallies, with Rafferty pocketing three draws. Junior
Amanda Ingersoll added three ground balls for the Ducks to go with one caused turnover.
Marzocca led Farmingdale with four goals, four caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Stevens will look to get back in the win column when it hosts in-state rival Montclair State University Saturday at the De Baun Athletic Complex. That contest is slated for an 11 a.m. start and all the action can be seen live at
