E8 Athletes of the Week: Feb. 3
The Indoor Track and Field Championship is in the books as the swimming and diving championship is nearing with basketball following not too far behind. Those earning weekly honors include....
Men’s Basketball Player – Nazareth
Jack Giles, Senior, Guard – Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius
Jack Giles averaged 29 points and shot 63.8 percent from the field as Nazareth won two of three Empire 8 Conference games last week. He set a school record by going 13-for-13 from the field for a career-high 38 points in an 87-84 win over St. John Fisher last Tuesday. He then scored a game-high 31 points in an 82-72 road win over Hartwick Friday, before completing the week with 18 points in a 73-69 loss at Stevens Saturday. In the three games, Giles shot 30-for-47 from the field (.638), including 12-for-20 (.600) from three-point range, and 15-for-18 (.833 from the free throw line. He also had nine rebounds and nine assists.
Men’s Basketball Rookie – Hartwick
Joey Lufkin, Freshman, Guard – Argyle, NY/Argyle
Joey Lufkin scored 10 points and pulled down four rebounds in Hartwick's 82-72 loss to Nazareth on Friday. Against St. John Fisher, Lufkin was on fire as he was 9-of-14 from the floor and hit 5-of-6 three-point shots for a career and season-high 28 points.
Women’s Basketball Player – Houghton
Kristen Moose, Senior, Guard – Swain, NY/Canaseraga
Kristen Moose averaged 29 points, 10.5 rebounds and five assists in a 1-1 week for Houghton. The senior shot 55.9 percent (19-of-34) from the field, 68.8 (11-of16) from the arc and 75.0 (9-of-12) from the charity stripe over the course of the two games. She scored a career high 33 points and hit a career high seven three-pointers in the win over Alfred on Tuesday night. And then she netted 25 points, grabbed 11 boards and dished out seven assists on Friday against Elmira.
Women’s Basketball Rookie – Houghton
Hannah Manwaring, Freshman, Guard – Barton, NY/Tioga Central
Hannah Manwaring averaged 13 points to lead Houghton to a 1-1 record on the week. On Tuesday, Manwaring scored a season-high 18 points off the bench in 92-85 win against Alfred. On Friday, she netted eight points in the loss to Elmira. On the week she shot 38.1% from the field, 31.2% from the arc and 71.4% from the line.
Men’s Swimming & Diving Athlete – Stevens
Ravi Sun, Sophomore – Arkadelphia, AR/Arkadelphia
Sophomore Ravi Sun won three events to lead Stevens to win a Saturday over Hartwick. Sun took first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time with a 51.85, the 200-yard backstroke with a 1:54.98, and the 200-yard IM, clocking a 1:56.58. Sun also was a member of the winning 200-medley relay team that turned in a 1:36.40.
Women’s Swimming & Diving Athlete – Stevens
Danielle Caruso, Freshman – Chesterfield, NJ/Northern Burlington County Regional
Freshman Danielle Caruso led Stevens to a win Saturday over Hartwick. She won the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:57.45, placed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a 5:10.88, took second with a 54.91 in the 100-free, and was part of the winning 400-free relay team that won and turned in a 3:43.31.
Men’s Indoor Track Athlete – Stevens
Shane Chiaravalle, Sophomore – Danbury, CT/Danbury
Sophomore Shane Chiaravalle was named Track Athlete of the Meet at the 2014 Indoor Championships with a second place showing in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.11 seconds, third in the 400-meter dash in 51.96 and ran a leg on the top 4x400-meter relay team that clocked a time of 3:30.08.
Men’s Indoor Field co-Athletes – St. John Fisher & Utica
Eric Riley, Junior – Wampsville, NY/Oneida
Rayshawn Scott, Freshman – Mays Landing, NJ/Buena Regional
Eric Riley and Rayshawn Scott were named Empire 8 Co-Field Athletes of the Meet Saturday.
Riley earned the athlete of the meet for the second-straight year as the St. John Fisher College men's track and field team placed second overall this past weekend. Riley won the long jump and qualified for ECACs after leaping a school-record 6.8 meters. He also placed second in the high jump 1.93 meters.
Scott led Utica to a fourth place finish at the Championships. Scott secured a victory in the triple jump shattering a school-record with an ECAC qualifying leap of 14.14 meters and missed the meet record by .02. He also placed third in the high jump with a distance of 1.88 meters.
Women’s Indoor Track Athlete – Ithaca
Harmony Graves, Junior – Ithaca, NY/Ithaca
Harmony Graves won the 200 meter dash and placed second in the 60 meter dash on her way to earning the Track Athlete of the Meet at the 2014 E8 Indoor Championships. Graves won gold in the 200 dash with a time of 26.23 and clocked an 8.03 in the 60 dash. She was also part of the wining 1600 relay team in an ECAC qualifying time of 4:08.89.
Women’s Indoor Field Athlete – Ithaca
Emilia Scheemaker, Junior – Scarborough, ME/Scarborough
Junior Emilia Scheemaker won back-to-back events at the 2014 Indoor Championships, hitting the ECAC standards both times, as she was named the Field Athlete of the Meet. She took gold in the long jump with a leap of 5.50 meters and won the triple with a mark of 12.07 meters, a Glazer Arena record.
