WLAX Teams Finish 2-2 on the Day

St. John Fisher 9, William Smith 7
The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the visiting William Smith Herons and held on late for a 9-7 victory at Growney Stadium for each team's season-opening game.

With Fisher leading 8-7 at the 2:38 mark it appeared as if the Herons had tied the score, however the goal was disallowed due to an illegal stick.  Taylor Hughes responded less than :15 seconds later to put the game out of reach at 9-7.

Fisher improves to 1-0 on the season while the Herons fall to 0-1.

Sophomore Chrissy Cook notched the Cardinals first two goals of the game, the first coming 10 minutes into the contest off a free position.  She followed it up less than a minute later with an unassisted goal.

The Cardinals increased their lead to 3-0 when Jordan Johnson connected with Hughes for the tally.  

It was not until the 8:42 mark of the first half before the Herons found the back of the net to cut the Cardinals lead to 3-1.

Fisher recorded its second free position goal of the game late in the half as Emily Bryerton notched her first of the year.  The Cardinals led 4-2 at intermission.

The Herons cut Fisher's lead to a one goal margin to start out the second half but Fisher scored the next three goals over a three minute span to open up its largest lead of the game at 7-3.  Erin Ward started the run followed by Bryerton and Hughes scoring their second goals of the contest. 

William Smith would prove to be resilient though, scoring the next two goals to make it 7-5 early in the second half.

Byerton scored the next goal, her third of the game, to give Fisher an 8-5 lead.  The Herons fought back to an 8-7 contest before Hughes sealed the win for Fisher.

Hughes and Bryerton each finished with three goals.  Ward added a goal and one helper for the Cardinals.


Houghton 16, Hiram 0
The Houghton College women's lacrosse team got the 2014 season off to a great start, dominating visiting Hiram College 16-0 at home Saturday.

Sisters Amanda Zacchigna (East Aurora, NY, East Aurora) and Jennifer Zacchigna (East Aurora, NY, East Aurora) each recored four goals on the afternoon, including three goals each in the opening half. Houghton led 10-0 at halftime. The Highlanders held 20-3 advantage in shots in the first 30 minutes.

Jenny Zaccignha added two assists on the afternoon. Maesa Phongsamouth (Leominster, Mass., Leominster)Jessica McDowell (Macedon, NY, Gananda HS) and Chandler Jones (Collegeville, PA, Spring-Ford HS) each scored twice, with Nicole Mason (East Aurora, NY, East Aurora) and Tyler Reese (Kennett Square, Pa, Unionville) adding a goal apiece. Reese also finished with a game-high three assists.

Carly Congilosi (Hamburg, NY, Eden JR/SR High) made two saves to get the shutout in goal.

The Highlanders outshot the Terriers, 36-3, and had a 28-13 advantage in ground balls. Houghton also controlled 15 of 18 draws.


Montclair 12, Stevens 10
The Montclair State University women's lacrosse team defeated Stevens Institute of Technology by a score of 12-10 Saturday at the De Baun Athletic Complex.
 
The first half was back-and-forth with the opening period resulting in a five goals for each side. Junior Caitlyn Hughes started the scoring just 1:06 into the game as the two teams traded scores over the first 4:51 of game time.
 
Senior Kara Rafferty and freshman Kathleen Kalbian scored back-to-back goals to give the Ducks a 4-2 margin with 20:32 remaining in the first, but the Red Hawks ended the half scoring three of the final four markers to tie the game heading into the break.
 
MSU (2-0) took a lead early in the second half, but Hughes knotted things at seven apiece with 24:53 left. The Red Hawks tallied the next two goals to open an 8-6 advantage at 18:57, and after sophomore Erika Wilcox pulled the Ducks within one, MSU ran off four-straight goals to make it a 12-7 game with less than eight minutes remaining.
 
Stevens came back to tally the final three goals, creating a tight 12-10 contest with 1:47 left, but the Red Hawks received a key save from freshman goalie Alexandra Tepper with 1:32 on the clock to essentially seal the win.
 
Kalbian and sophomore Mackenzie Swartout were responsible for the final three Stevens goals of the afternoon.
 
Kalbian played a marvelous all-around game for Stevens with three goals, seven draw controls, five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Hughes had two goals and one assist, and Wilcox had one goal, one assist, three draw controls and three ground balls. Swartout finished with two goals on three shots, and sophomore Amanda Kowalski scooped up a trio of ground balls. Sophomore Jaimie Mastrogiacomo recorded an assist and three ground balls, and senior goalie Sarah Prall had six saves and four ground balls.
 
Junior Tierney Conlon had six points on four goals and two assists to pace Montclair, and junior Jenna Bussiere tallied three goals. Tepper made 12 saves to earn the win in goal.
 
Stevens (1-2) ended with a 27-22 edge in shots, and MSU had a 28-26 margin in ground balls. Stevens won 14-of-24 draws and each team had 25 total fouls. The Ducks were 2-for-8 on free-position shots, and the Red Hawks went 3-for-5.


Oswego 10, Utica 6
The Utica College women's lacrosse team dropped its season opener to visiting Oswego State, 10-6, Saturday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.  Oswego used six unanswered goals to down the Pioneers.

Oswego jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first 2:18 of the game, however Utica fought back, scoring the next three.  Juniors Morgan DuPont and Megan Kane picked up where they left off last season, scoring Utica's first two goals.  Freshman Rebecca Plunkett netted her first collegiate goal just over eight minutes into the game to give UC a 3-2 lead.

Kane added two more tallies assisted by Courtney Wheeler, and DuPont to give Utica a 5-4 lead at the half.  Plunkett added her second of the game just 41 seconds into the second half, assisted by Julia Primps, however the Lakers scored the next six goals to capture the victory.

Emily Lange led all scorers with four goals, while Erannan Shattuck had two goals and four assists for Oswego.  Sophomore Erin Jacobsen had seven saves in her first collegiate start, while her counterpart, Nikki Greco had 16 saves in the win.
