Stevens Loses First Game of Season to Catholic, 4-3

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 9, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team suffered its first loss of the 2014 season to Catholic University, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Griffith Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Sunday's game was the first for Stevens (3-1) away from Dobbelaar Field and opened the Ducks' three-game Spring Break trip to Myrtle Beach.
Catholic scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning on an inside-the-park homerun down the leftfield line.
Sophomore
Greg Jakusik (The Woodlands, Texas) tossed five strong innings and allowed three runs, while senior
Mark Poinsett (Ocean Gate, N.J.) threw the final 3 2/3 innings in the loss.
Sophomore
Jonathan Toro (Sanford, Fla.) picked up two base hits and stole a pair of bags to lead Stevens offensively. Classmate
Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) drove in a run on a single, as did fellow sophomore
Nicholas Sieber (Shrewsbury, Mass.) on a ground out.
Freshman
Zeph Walters (Diamond Bar, Calif.) picked up the third RBI for the Ducks on a walk. Junior
Marc Calleo (Bayville, N.J.) went 1-for-3 at the plate and played a solid defensive shortstop.
Stevens takes on Ursinus College at 1 p.m. at The Polo Grounds in Myrtle Beach.
