Spring sports are in full swing as most programs have been playing in the warmer climate of the south while on break. Those earning weekly awards include....
Baseball Player of the Week – St. John Fisher
Nick Flemister, Senior, Catcher – Pittsford, NY/Pittsford-Sutherland
Nick Flemister helped lead the St. John Fisher College baseball team to four wins last week as the Cardinals took part in the Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational in Florida. Flemister went a combined 12-for-15 last week with four doubles and a homerun. He tallied seven RBI and scored seven runs as Fisher outscored its competition by a combined score of 53-11. Flemister went 4-for-4 in back-to-back games and is currently batting .577 on the year.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week – Stevens
Peirce Marston, Junior – Silver Spring, MD/Montgomery Blair
Peirce Marston tossed three no-hit innings with six strikeouts in a 13-1 victory over John Jay on March 7. Marston allowed just one runner on a hit by pitch and needed just 36 pitches to get through 10 batters for the victory.
Softball Player of the Week – St. John Fisher
Lauren Owens, Sophomore – Holmes, NY/Pawling
Lauren Owens had a strong week on the left side of the infield as the St. John Fisher College softball team went 8-2 last week. Owens batted a combined 15-for-29 (.577)in 10 starts for the Cardinals. She notched five extra-base hits including four doubles and a triple to go along with five RBI and 11 runs scored. The Holmes native also picked up a stolen base and drew one base-on-balls.
Softball Pitcher of the Week – St. John Fisher
Lauren Wesolowski, Junior – Lancaster, NY/St. Mary’s
Lauren Wesolowski picked up three wins last week as the St. John Fisher College softball team went 8-2 against some premier programs in Fort Myers, FL. Wesolowski took to the circle five times last week including four starts and allowed only five earned runs on 23 hits over 30.1 innings for a 1.16 ERA. The Lancaster native struck out 20 batters and gave up only two walks all week.
Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week – Nazareth
Luke Wooters, Sophomore, Attack – White Plains, NY/Iona Prep
Wooters had 5 goals and 4 assists last week as Nazareth split a pair of non-conference games. He had three goals and one assist in a 16-11 win over Hamilton last Wednesday, then added two goals and three assists in a 10-9 loss to St. Lawrence Saturday. He also totaled 9 shots and 9 ground balls. He leads the team overall with 14 points on 9 goals, 5 assists.
Men’s Lacrosse Goalie of the Week – Ithaca
Scott Sidnam, Sophomore – Camillus, NY/West Genesee
In 105 minutes in goal, sophomore Scott Sidnam recorded 18 saves, while allowing just eight goals, during a 2-0 week for the Bombers. Sidnam picked up a win over Lycoming with a seven-save performance and made 11 stops in a win at Ursinus. He had a save percentage of 69.2.
Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week – Elmira
Moorea Spoljaric, Sophomore, Attack – Saugerties, NY/Saugerties
Moorea Spoljaric had a pair of four-goal games over the weekend as Elmira went 1-1. Her eight weekend goals came on just 12 shots for a shooting percentage of .667. Of her eight goals, two came on free position attempts. She also picked up an assist, five groundballs and five draw controls.
Women’s Lacrosse Goalie of the Week – Utica
Erin Jacobson, Sophomore – Staten Island, NY/Curtis
Erin Jacobson picked up two wins this week. On Wednesday against Skidmore College, she recorded eight saves while only giving up five goals. She also scooped up a ground ball in the 7-5 win. On Saturday against SUNY Potsdam, she saved a season-high nine shots while letting in six goals. She also grabbed two ground balls.
Men’s Tennis Player of the Week – Elmira
Sam Pine, Senior – Elmira, NY/Thomas A. Edison
Sam Pine was an integral part of EC’s 5-4 win over Division II Daemen College on Saturday, March 8th, earning two points for the Soaring Eagles by winning both his singles and his doubles matches. Sam started his afternoon by teaming up with partner, Keith Bujak, for an 8-5 win at first doubles. Their win gave Elmira a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play. He then posted a convincing 6-0, 6-2 victory at fourth singles over Daemen’s Adam Kerr. With the victory EC moves back to .500 on the season and 2-1 in spring matches.
