Ithaca and Stevens Win Twice
ITHACA
the Ithaca College softball team (4-0) earned back-to-back wins on the second day of the Dot Richardson Spring Games, defeating Transylvania by a score of 7-2 before taking down Rhode Island, 8-0.
Senior
Sam Bender (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) picked up the complete game victory in the first contest of the day against Transylvania, allowing just four hits and two earned runs. Junior
Francesca Busa (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) collected two hits in four at-bats, also picking up two RBI. Freshman
Jessie Fleck (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) also earned two hits, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Tara Condon (Tomkins Cove, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) and
Erin McQuillan (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia West) each scored two runs in the victory. Sophomore
Laura Quicker (West Islip, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) picked up the win in game two, helping Ithaca to the 8-0 shutout over Rhode Island.
STEVENS
The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team scored in nine of the 12 innings they played on Monday, as they beat Saint Mary's College 7-0 and Mount Mary University 25-0.
Senior Kayla Berardi, junior Brianna Sandone, and junior Meagan Lorenz combined to give-up just four hits in 12 innings of work. The loss dropped Saint Mary's and Mount Mary to 1-2 and 1-5 respectively, while the Ducks are out to their best start in school history at 3-1.
Stevens 7, Saint Mary's 0
Stevens jumped out to a lead in the first when senior Danielle DeFeo scored off junior Jamie DeGennaro's ground-out to short, and then one more in the second after senior Stephanie Senkevich ripped a double to score sophomore Sydney Spitz.
Saint Mary's answered in the bottom of the second by loading the bases with no one out, but Spitz snagged a line drive off the bat off Cecily Reyes, then stepped on second for a double-play. Berardi shut the door on the inning by striking out Angela Dainelli, getting out of the jam with no runs.
The Ducks added three more in the third when sophomore Gavriella Risman-Jones scored off a sacrifice fly from Spitz, followed by a two-run double from Senkevich to score freshman Jessica Rees and DeGennaro. Senkevich added another RBI with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth, while senior Noreen Jordan ended their scoring with a sacrifice fly to score Rees.
Berardi retired the final six batters to pick up her first win since 2012, and Senkevich finished with a game-high four RBIs.
Stevens 25, Mount Mary 0
Freshman Amanda DiLeo tripled with two outs in the first to score junior Noelle Mulligan to give Stevens its fifth run of the first inning. The Ducks continued to pound Mount Mary pitcher Katie Edwards with five more in the fifth, before exploding for a 12 run inning in the third.
Stevens capped it's scoring in the fourth with a DiLeo single to score Senkevich, followed by a walk by freshman Gina Schnecker to score Spitz.
Schnecker finished with three hits and five RBIs to lead the team, while Defeo and DiLeo both added four RBIs each. Freshmen Emily Sellitti and Kelly Klewicki also each had three RBI's, while Sanone picked up her second win of the year with three shut-out, no-hit innings. Junior transfer Meagan Lorenz made her Stevens debut with two shut-out innings to close the game.
It was a game of firsts as the 25 runs, 23 hits, and 23 RBIs are all the most in school history, while Schnecker, DiLeo and Klewicki all drove in the first runs of their collegiate careers.
ALFRED
The Alfred University softball team split two games Monday afternoon on the first day of its 12-game Spring Break trip in Arizona. The Saxons rebounded from a 6-4 loss to Baldwin Wallace with a 10-8 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran.
In the win over Wisconsin Lutheran, Alfred erased a one-run deficit with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wisconsin Lutheran had rallied from five runs down with six runs in the top half of the sixth to take an 8-7 lead.
Freshman third baseman
Liz Thompson (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored and senior outfielder
Samijo Scheer (Corning, NY/Corning East) scored a run and drove in four to pace the Saxons. Scheer hit a two-run homerun in a six-run fourth inning that put the Saxons up 7-2.
With AU trailing 8-7, sophomore outfielder
Samantha Jauregui (Lindsay, CA/Lindsay) led off the bottom of the sixth with a single. Jauregui went to third on a single by sophomore second baseman
Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.), who advanced to second on the throw in. Scheer followed with a sacrifice fly to score Jauregui with the tying run and sophomore shortstop
Nicole Maher (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) doubled to plate Torchia with the go-ahead run. Sophomore
Nora Passuite (Lockport, NY/Lockport) tripled in Maher to give AU a 10-8 lead.
Sophomore pitcher
Katelyn Jakobsen (Elmwood Park, IL/Elmwood Park) came on in the top of the seventh and allowed a lead-off single before retiring three straight to earn the save for junior
Tori Kramp (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury).
Jauregui (2-for-4) and Torchia (2-for-2) each scored twice for the Saxons, while Maher, Passuite and freshman Sophia Chiavatti (Austin, CA/Foothills) (RBI) each had two hits.
Junior
Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) got the pitching start for Alfred and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits over five innings. Chiavatti relieved Wickwire to start the sixth and allowed six earned runs on three hits and four walk in two-thirds of an inning. Kramp relieved Chiavatti and ended the inning with a strikeout.
In the loss to Baldwin Wallace, AU was down 3-0 before plating four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead. Baldwin Wallace tied the game with a run in the fifth, then scored a pair in the seventh to claim the comeback win.
Torchia went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Saxons. Sophomore catcher
Jasmine Picini (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Scheer had a hit and scored a run. Thompson, freshman
Hannah Lawrence (Spencer, NY/Spencer-Van Etten) and junior
Alyson Hampton (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard) each scored a run for AU.
Jakobsen started for AU and went two innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits while striking out two. Chiavatti took the loss in relief, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and striking out three.
NAZARETH
Nazareth gained its first softball victory of the season Monday as the Golden Flyers rallied from an early deficit to defeat Mount St. Mary, 8-1. The Golden Flyers also lost to Curry College in the second game by an identical 8-1 margin.
In the opening game, sophomore
Carly Pike went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a run batted in and junior
Sophia Rhoades drove in two runs with two hits and a sacrifice fly to spearhead Nazareth's nine-hit attack. Freshman
Mary Greco made her pitching debut and scattered six hits over seven innings and struck out two.
After Mount St. Mary scored in the first inning, Nazareth rallied for two runs each in the second and third innings and then broke the game open with four runs in the fifth. Pike and Rhoades each singled in the second inning and later scored. Pike came home on an infield grounder by
Shauna Bardanis, while Rhoades scored on an error. In the third,
Morgan Ross led off with a double and scored one out later on a double by
Sarah Cipperly. Two batters later, Rhoades singled hom Cipperly with Nazareth's fourth run.
Nazareth scored four times with three hits in the fifth. Pike had a run-scoring single that chased home
Kailey Ritch, who led off the inning with a base hit. After walks to
Maureen Rogers and Cipperly, two runs came home on a sacrifice fly by Rhoades. Bardanis then followed with an RBI double.
In the second game, Nazareth was held without a hit until the seventh inning, when Cipperly singled home Ross, who reached on an error to open the inning. Curry, meanwhile, built an eight-run lead with two runs in the second inning, five more in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Nicole Bayona pitched for Nazareth and allowed seven earned runs on three hits and six walks.
