E8 Men's Lacrosse Teams Fall Short
Brockport 6, St. John Fisher 5
The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team rallied late in the fourth quarter, but fell one goal short, losing to the College of Brockport, 6-5, on Tuesday afternoon at Kennedy Shriver Stadium.
Trailing by a single goal with time winding down in the fourth quarter, the Cardinals nearly tied the score, peppering Brockport's defense with two shots, but neither found their mark as time ran out on the comeback attempt.
Fisher held a 3-2 lead after the first half of play, but the Golden Eagles evened things up quickly, scoring the tying goal less than thirty seconds into the third quarter before rattling off three more tallies to hold a 6-3 lead.
Fisher would battle back however, netting two fourth-quarter goals in under a minute of play. After a Golden Eagle penalty, the Cardinals took advantage of the extra-man opportunity when
Joe Gaug found
Gary Bova to cut Brockport's lead to 6-4.
Nick Rossi would cap Fisher's rally, bringing the visitors to within one goal, after finding the back of the net on a pass from
Jeff Wester to make it 6-5, but that was as close as Fisher would come as Brockport held on for its second win of the season.
Oneonta 9, Hartwick 5
The Hartwick and Oneonta State men's lacrosse teams were deadlocked at 5-5 heading into the final quarter but the visiting Red Dragons outscored the Hawks 4-0 in the fourth period to come away with a 9-5 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Wright Stadium.
The game was tight for over three quarters of play despite the Red Dragons outshooting the Hawks by a wide margin. It was 'Wick that had the upper hand early on as
Roy Simmons got Hartwick on the board first with an unassisted goal 32 seconds into the contest. Simmons would then assist
Zach Gropper on his seventh goal of the season at 8:41 to make it 2-0. O-State tallied a score with 1:28 remaining in the frame to cut the Hartwick lead to 2-1.
Oneonta tied the game up 43 seconds into the second stanza on a goal from Connor Coyle. Midway through the period, the Red Dragons' Josh Heller scored unassisted to put O-State ahead 3-2 at 7:29.
'Wick responded with 4:53 left in the quarter when
Mike Vaglica found the back of the net to even the game at 3-all. A slashing penalty on the Red Dragons' Wesley Bank gave the Hawks a man-up opportunity. Hartwick cashed in when Simmons hooked up with Gropper again at 4:23 to give the Hawks back the lead, 4-3. It would be a short-lived advantage as Kevin Theofield scored with 3:46 remaining to even the contest at 4-4 going into halftime.
Oneonta State went ahead 5-4 with 9:07 showing on the game clock in the third period. The lead would stay in the visitor's favor until the 2:36 mark. A penalty on the Red Dragons' Jimmy Reiser gave 'Wick another man-up situation. The Hawks made good as
Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North) connected with Vaglica to knot it up at 5-5.
Penalties on
Kevin Rourke and
Sean Brown at the end of the third stanza put the Red Dragons in an extra-man opportunity. The Hawks successfully killed off the penalty to keep the score tied up. O-State, however, would take the lead for good on Theofield's second score of the afternoon at 13:16 of the fourth quarter. Goals from Coyle, Devon Casey, and Josh Heller added to the lead as the Red Dragons held the Hawks scoreless in the last period to win the game.

Hamilton 10, Utica 9
The Utica College men's lacrosse team rallied from a five goal deficit and made it a one goal game with 13 seconds left, but the comeback bid fell just short as host Hamilton earned a 10-9 victory and retained the Contineer Cup for the fourth consecutive season.
It was the first loss of the young season for the Pioneers, who are now 2-1 overall. Hamilton, which outscored UC 4-0 in the first quarter, collected its first victory of the year as its record moved to 1-3.
The Contineer Cup rivalry game began in 2011 and the traveling cup remains with the winner of the contest after each yearly meeting between crosstown rivals Utica and Hamilton. The win was Hamilton's 13th straight over Utica, who trails the all-time series 14-1. The teams' last three meetings at Hamilton have been decided by one goal.
Utica scored the game's final three goals, pulling to within a goal with 13 seconds left but Hamilton freshman Trip Connors won the ensuing face-off and the Continentals ran out the clock for the win.
A goal by Bryan Hopper with
7:36 left in the first half put the Continentals ahead 7-2 before the Pioneers began their rally by scoring four of the next five goals.
Andrew Jamieson (Six Nations, ON/Hagersville) capped that run by scoring his second goal of the year
4:35 into the third quarter to pull Utica to 8-6. Hamilton's Joe Ricciuti scored the game's next two goals – giving him six on the season – before Utica's
Zack Stevenson (Elbridge, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) closed out the quarter, beating Hamilton's Will Driscoll with nine seconds left.
The Pioneers' defense held the hosts to two shots on goal in the final quarter.
Trent Jacobs (Akwesasne/Brewster Academy) scored his team-leading eight goal of the spring
1:43 into the period, converting a pass from jnuir transfer
Christian Reiller (Salamanca, NY/Genesee CC). Reiller finished the afternoon with a career-high four assists. After Utica's ride forced a failed clear with
2:42 left in regulation, the Pioneers maintained possession until a goal by freshman
Ross Cree (Akwesasne/Salmon River ) with 13 seconds left.
