ITHACA
The Ithaca College softball team (6-0) continued its undefeated start to the season with two more wins on Tuesday, beating The College of New Jersey and Penn State-Behrend on the third day of the Dot Richardson Spring Games.

The Bombers needed an extra frame to defeat The College of New Jersey in the first game of the day, dropping the Lions by a score of 4-3.

Senior Sam Bender picked up the complete-game win, striking out three and allowing just two earned runs in eight innings of work. Sophomore Casey Gavin and freshman Jessie Fleck paced the Bombers with two hits, each going 2-for-3. Senior Sydney Folk picked up Ithaca's only extra-base hit, going 1-for-2 with a double, a RBI and a run scored.

The Bombers jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the first on a hit and an error to go up, 2-0. The Lions responded with a quick run at the top of the second inning to cut the Bomber lead in half. After Ithaca scored again to take a 3-1 lead, TCNJ answered with runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the contest at 3-3.

Bender recorded three-straight fly outs in the top of the eighth inning, giving the Bombers a chance to win in the bottom of the frame. Junior Francesca Busa started the inning at second due to the international tiebreaker rule, eventually moving to third on an error in the next at-bat. Folk earned a walk to load the bases, before junior Monica Capolongo hit a sacrifice fly to bring Busa home for the victory.

Ithaca's momentum carried over into the second tilt of the day, as the Bombers dominated Penn State-Behrend by a score of 9-2.

The victory was highlighted by a three-run home run from Folk, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Sophomore Kelly Robichaud also had a strong day, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate. Gavin earned her second multi-hit game of the afternoon with a 2-for-4 performance.

Sophomore Allison Macari picked up the win, allowing just one earned run and three hits in the complete game victory.


NAZARETH
Nazareth split a pair of non-conference softball games Tuesday as the Golden Flyers watched a late rally fall short in a 2-1 loss to North Park of Illinois before rebounding to defeat Elms from Massachusetts, 7-1.

Nazareth is 2-4 overall and idle on Wednesday. The Golden Flyers resume their schedule Thursday with games against Wartburg at 9 a.m. and New Jersey City University at 11.

Freshman Nicole White pitched well for Nazareth in the first game against North Park as she yielded just single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Trailing 2-0, Nazareth scored once in the top of the seventh as Carly Pike singled and advanced to second on the throw to the infield. She scored Nazareth's lone run on a single by Sophia Rhoades, who was later thrown out trying to advance to third base for the final out of the game. Pike and senior Sarah Cipperly each had two hits for Nazareth.

In the second game, Rhoades went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs to pace Nazareth's eight-hit attack. Senior Emily Beckley also had two hits with two runs scored an an RBI. That offense was in support of sophomore Danae Wetherbee, who pitched all seven innings and allowed just one run on five hits with three strikeouts.

After falling behind 1-0 in the third inning, Nazareth erupted for four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Pike and Maureen Rogers singled home runs and Rhoades tripled home two more. Nazareth scored three more runs in the sixth, highlighted by a run-scoring double for Rhoades and RBI singles for Beckley and Maureen Ross.


STEVENS
The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team dropped a 3-0 game to Bridgewater State University, before losing 4-0 to University of Pittsburgh-Bradford on Tuesday in the Gene Cusic Classic. The losses evened the Ducks record at 3-3.

 

Stevens co-captains junior Noelle Mulligan and sophomore Gavriella Risman-Jones added two hits each in both games. The Ducks two opposing starters came into the game with a combined 5-0 record and sub 1.00 ERA.

 

Bridgewater 3, Stevens 0

Bridgewater threatened in the first after leadoff hitter Jacelyn Bettencourt walked, reached second on a ground-out, and went to third on an error. Senior Kayla Berardi worked out of the trouble though thanks to two line-drive catches from senior Danielle DeFeo at short to end the threat.

 

After the Ducks went down in order in their half of the first and second, Bridgewater finally broke through in the third with a two-run double from Jess Laudati to score Karissa Pagan and Becky Percuoco. Stevens tried to answer in the bottom of the inning after junior Noelle Mulligan singled with one out, but were unable to get her around to score. Bridgewater added another in the fifth off Laudati's second double of the game.

 

Stevens rallied in the sixth when after Berardi was hit by a pitch with one out, senior Danielle DeFeo walked.  Sophomore Gavriella Risman-Jones singled to right, but Berardi was thrown out at home on the hit, followed by a ground-out from junior Jamie DeGennaro to end the inning.

 

The Ducks threatened again in the seventh when freshman Kelly Klewicki worked a lead-off work, followed by a single from freshman Jessica Rees, but Bridgewater pitcher Amber White retired the next three to end the game.

 

White came into the game with a 3-0 record and had yet to give up an earned run all season. Berardi continues to pitch well her her come-back season, allowing just two earned runs and striking-out four over seven innings of work.

 

Pitt-Bradford 4, Stevens 0

Pitt-Bradford jumped out to a lead in the second when Jillian Fleming singled to lead-off, and later scored off a throwing error. Then in the fourth, Leann Bell led off with a double, followed by a triple off the bat of Heidi Lucke to put the Panthers up 2-0. A single in the inning from Ang Comilla extended the lead to 3-0, but Stevens starter junior Brianna Sandone induced a ground-ball out to get out of the inning, starding two more runners. 

 

The Ducks battled back in the fifth when Spitz singled with one out, but two straight strike-outs killed the rally. Pitt-Bradford added one more in the sixth before starter Sydney Mosby retired the final six hitters to seal the win.

 

The loss is the first of the young season for Sandone who consistently worked herself out of jams, stranding eight base runners over the course of seven innings.

 

Pitt-Bradford's senior starter Mosby came into the game with a 2-0 record and had given up just two runs in 14 innings with 15 strikeouts. The win evened Pitt-Bradford's record at 3-3.


ALFRED
 The Alfred University softball team won a pair of games Tuesday afternoon on the second day of its Spring Break trip to Tuscon, AZ. The Saxons edged Dordt College 5-4 before whipping Dickinson College, 12-1 in five innings.

AU is playing 12 games on its trip to Arizona, which began Monday with a split of two games and concludes on Saturday. The Saxons improved to 3-1 with Tuesday's sweep.

Against Dordt, sophomore Katelyn Jakobsen (Elmwood park, IL/Elmwood park) got the pitching win, tossing three innings of one-hit scoreless relief of freshman starter Sophia Chiavatti (Santa Ana, CA/Foothills). Chiavatti went four innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits, striking out three.

Senior outfielder Samijo Scheer (Corning, NY/Corning East) had a double and two RBIs and sophomore second baseman Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) scored two runs to lead the Saxons' offense. Freshman third baseman Liz Thompson (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) had a sacrifice fly to drive in a run, stole an base and scored once; sophomore outfielder Samantha Jauregui (Lindsay, CA/Lindsay) went 2-for-2 and scored once; and senor outfielderRachel Guszick (Sparrowbush, NY/Port Jervis) had a hit, walked and scored a run.

In the victory over Dickinson, Thompson had a huge game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a homerun, driving in five runs, stealing a base and scoring once. SeniorStephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) and junior outfielder Alyson Hampton (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard) each went 3-for-4 and scored two and three runs, respectively.

Sophomore outfielder Jasmine Picini (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac) had two hits in three at-bats and drove in two runs; sophomore shortstop Nicole Maher(Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) had a double, two RBIs and scored a run; and sophomore catcher Samantha Greenberg (Toms River, NJ/Toms River) (RBI) and senior outfielder Danielle Mastropierro (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) each had a hit and scored once.

Junior pitcher Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) earned the complete-game victory for the Saxons, allowing one earned on four hits while striking out four.
