Utica 13, Clarkson 11
The Utica College women's lacrosse team extended its winning streak to three games as the Pioneers hung on for a 13-11 victory over visiting Clarkson University Tuesday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. The Pioneers led 11-4 at the half until the Golden Knight stormed back with the first six goals of the second half to make it a one goal contest, 11-10, with 12:14 remaining. The Pioneers were able to fend off the Golden Knight comeback and netted two of the game's final three goals to earn the 13-11 victory.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 5:37 of the contest behind two goals from
Megan Kane and one from the stick of
Patricia Kane. Clarkson answered back with a goal of its own, but the Pioneers got right back to work with goals from P. Kane and
Colleen Dowling to give the home team a 6-2 lead with 11:07 left in the first half of play.
UC outscored Clarkson 5-2 in the final 7:09 of the first half to take a commanding 11-4 lead as the halftime horn sounded.
Megan Kane scored the final three goals of the first half for Utica, including her fifth goal of the game with just seven seconds left in the first half.
Clarkson dominated the first 18 minutes of the second half, rattling off six straight goals to cut UC's seven goal lead to just one, 11-10, with 12:14 remaining in regulation.
The Pioneers were able to right the ship and took a 12-10 lead with 6:44 remaining when sophomore
Courtney Wheeler scored her second of the season to give Utica a small cushion.
Clarkson's Paige Fayette scored a free position goal with 32 seconds left in the contest to make it a one goal game once again. The Golden Knight's also won the ensuing draw control, but the Pioneers forced a turnover to secure possession with less than 20 seconds left on the clock. Briana Estanbrook was fouled with two seconds left as Clarkson goalie Danielle Tani was out of the net trying to force a Pioneer turnover. This left Estabrook with an open look on net from about 20 yards out and she delivered her first goal of the season to lock up the victory for the Pioneers.
Freshman
Jackie Gould also registered her first collegiate goal in the contest, while reigning Empire 8 goalie of the Week
Erin Jacobson stopped seven shots in her third victory of the young season.
Houghton 16, Cazenovia 10
Freshman Jenny Zacchigna tallied five goals and two assists to lead Houghton women's lacrosse to a 16-10 win over visiting Cazenovia College on Tuesday night.
It didn't take long for the Highlanders to get rolling. Tyler Reese scored just 23 seconds into the contest off an assist from Chandler Jones. Zacchigna then went for back-to-back scores at the 23:33 and 21:48 marks, respectively. After a Wildcat goal, Nicole Mason, Reese and Jones each scored to put Houghton up 6-1 with 12 minutes left in the first half.
Cazenovia would score three of the next four goals to pull within 7-4, but the Highlanders finished the half with four goals over the final 5:33 to take an 11-4 lead into the locker room.
After Amanda Zacchigna opened the second half with a goal off an assist from sister Jenny, the final 30 minutes turned into a game of three-goal runs. Cazenovia took the first, scoring three-straight to make the score 12-7 with 20:33 remaining. Houghton responded with three of their own, coming off the sticks of Jessica McDowell, Jenny Zacchigna and Amanda Zacchigna. Three more Cazenovia goals made the score 15-10, but Reese finished the scoring with her third of the game at the 6:33 mark.
Jones and Amanda Zacchigna scored three goals each, with Jones also collecting three assists. Reese also finished with five ground balls and six draw controls. Maesa Phongsamouth led the Highlanders with six ground balls.
Carly Congilosi got the win with five saves between the pipes.
Houghton had a 44-22 advantage in shots and 20-7 edge in draw controls, but other team stats were relatively close. Ground balls were 33-30 in Houghton's favor and turnovers were tied at 25 apiece.
Ithaca 15, Connecticut College 5
The Ithaca College women's lacrosse team (1-2) picked up its first win of the season Tuesday at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. The Bombers posted 12 second-half scores to upend Connecticut College (1-2), 15-5.
The Camels tallied the game's first two goals, but Ithaca rattled off 10 consecutive scores, bridging the halves, to lead 10-2 with 19 minutes lingering in the game. Connecticut College snapped its scoring drought on the next draw before Ithaca instated a running clock with a 10-goal gap at 14:11. The teams traded two goals each in the final 10 minutes of play for a 15-5 final.

Molly Fischer and sophomores
Riley Marion and
Ally Runyon each netted hat tricks. Runyon and junior
Natalie Lang added game-highs of two assists apiece. Lang also had one goal. Sophomore
Taylor Purvis chipped in two scores and one assist. Senior
Becky Guzzo scored once and assisted once and juniors
Niki Standera and
Emily Peters tallied one each to round out the season-high goal total for the Bombers.
Fischer won a Bomber-best four draws and senior
Anya Eckhardt scooped up three ground balls. Rookie
Emily Ross recorded her first career victory with a 12-save performance between the pipes.
Connecticut College edged Ithaca in shots, 23-21, and held a 19-14 margin in ground balls. Ithaca, who was 4-of-5 in free position shots, won 13 draws to the Camels' 11.
Hartwick 12, Misericordia 11
Down 11-8 with less than 20 minutes to go, Hartwick's women's lacrosse team scored the game's final four goals while holding the Cougars scoreless in a 12-11 road victory. The Hawks improve to 3-2 overall with the win.
A pair of freshmen -
Lauren Rosenberg and
Courtney Coons – combined for nine of the Hawks' 12 goals on the day. Junior
Emily Jweid contributed two goals and three assists.
Liz Mulvery gave the Cougars the 11-8 lead with her second goal of the game with 19:55 left in the contest and Misericordia seemed destined for their second win of the year. The Hawks had other plans as Rosenberg tallied at 19:14, Coons scored off a
Kia Ference feed at 13:35, and Rosenberg's fifth tally of the game tied the score at 10:31. Jweid put the Hawks in front for the first time all day with 8:28 left on the clock.
With the advantage, the Hawks' defense held up. Misericordia out-shot the Hawks 6-0 over the final eight minutes, with Hartwick goalkeeper
Steph Luce making four stops to preserve the victory.
The Cougars started the game with three goals in the opening 3:29 to forge ahead 3-0 in the early going. Coons got the Hawks into the scoring column with her first of the day at 20:26 only to have Melina Juliano score the first of her four goals 40 ticks later.
Coons and Rosenberg scored 22 seconds apart to narrow the gap to one, 4-3. The two teams traded tallies before the Cougars would score three unanswered goals in a 2:08 span deep in the first half to take their biggest lead of the game, 8-4, heading into the intermission.
The Hawks quickly got right back into the game with Coons, Rosenberg, and
Meagan Wright each scoring in the first 3:18 of the second half, and Misericordia's lead was trimmed to one, 8-7.
Kate Pagnotta got one back for Misericordia and Jweid answered 43 seconds later to keep it a one-goal game. Brooke North and Mulvey would give the Cougars 11 before the Hawks would mount their comeback in the final 20 minutes.
Rosenberg netted five goals on the day with Coons scoring four times. Wright led Hartwick with three ground balls.
Caroline Stanford added two ground balls and a team-best two caused turnovers. Jweid had a pair of ground balls.
Juliano (4) and North (3) combined for seven scores for the Cougars. Goalkeeper Katie McLoughlin made 14 stops in the Misericordia cage.
Luce would finish with 12 saves for the Hawks. He made seven in the first half.
Montclair 18, Alfred 3
The Alfred University women's lacrosse team dropped its 2014 season opener, 18-3, to unbeaten Montclair (NJ), in a game played in Myrtle Beach, SC, Tuesday afternoon.
Alfred, which trailed 10-1 at the half, got two goals from junior attack
Kaitlyn Button (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) and one from freshman attack
Megan Wendt (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island). Junior
Taylor Tarajos (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) went the distance in goal for the Saxons.
Montclair improved to 5-0 with the victory.
