RPI Knocks Off Stevens

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 11, 2014) – Junior Danielle Stewart picked up the win at No. 2 singles on Tuesday, however the Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team dropped the match 7-2 to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
The match was the second of three the Ducks will play as part of their spring break trip.
Stevens fell behind early in the match when Amanda Alexander and Kelsey Ham beat sophomores Julia Guignard and Alexis Connor at No. 2 doubles. The Ducks evened the score at No. 3 when freshman Allie Masciana and Stewart pulled-out the close 8-6 win over Christina Ciamarra and Jessica Buckley, but lost the advantage at No. 1 in a close 9-8 tie-breaker loss that went back-and-forth between Casey Olsen and Emily Laurillard, and junior Jessica Boruque and senior Lisa Tessitore.
In singles, RPI added to their lead with Ham's 6-0, 6-1 win at No 5, followed by Emily Aaldenberg's 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6. RPI continued their win streak with a 6-1, 6-0 win for Alexander over Julia Guignard at No. 4, before Ciamara beat Connor 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3.
Stewart was down in the first set at No. 2, 4-1 to Emily Laurilliard , but came back to win 6-4, 6-2 for the Ducks only singles win of the afternoon. The match wrapped up at No. 1 where Olsen came from behind after dropping the first set against Bourque to take the second 6-1, before winning the third in a tiebreaker.
RPI came into the match ranked No. 15 in the Northeast.
The loss drops Stevens to 8-5, while RPI moves to 6-0. The Ducks will have the day off on Wednesday before their trip finale against Haverford on Thursday.
