SUNY Canton 19, Houghton 6
The Highlander offense ran dry against the strong defense of SUNY Canton as they dropped a 19-6 decision to the Roos in women's lacrosse action at home Friday night.
The Roos got on the board with two goals in the first 1:21, but Nicole Mason pulled Houghton to within one just over two minutes later. The teams continued to exchange goals over the next 10 minutes, with Jenny Zacchigna and Tyler Reese each scoring for the Highlanders.
Up 4-3 with 17:02 left in the first half, SUNY Canton scored eight-straight goals to take control with a 12-4 lead. Amanda Zacchigna added her ninth goal of the season with just under two minutes to go, but the Roos finished a frustrating first half for the Highlanders with a goal with three seconds left.
Houghton struggled to get many quality scoring chances in the opening 30 minutes, as the Roos defenders played tight to their men and easily closed any open spaces near the goal.
As effective as their defense was, the Roos offense was firing on all cylinders as well. The visitors scored five-straight goals to open the second half. Houghton was able to get goals from Amanda Zacchigna and Mason in in the closing minutes.
SUNY Canton outshot the Highlanders 32-20, but they had a big advantage in shots on goal (30-12). Groundballs were in SUNY Canton's favor, 27-22, and they also held a 15-12 edge in draw controls.
