Wickwire tosses no-hitter as Saxons wrap up Arizona trip with pair of wins

TUSCON, AZ – Junior Alison Wickwire (Towanda, PA/Towanda) threw a no-hitter Saturday as the Alfred University softball team downed Crown College, 12-0 in five innings, to wrap up its 12-Game Spring Break trip to Arizona with a pair of wins.

Earlier in the day, the Saxons shut out Augsburg College, 18-0, with sophomore Katelyn Jakobsen (Elmwood Park, IL/Elmwood Park) tossing a one-hit, five-inning shutout. With the two-game sweep Saturday, AU returns from Arizona with a 9-3 record.

In the win, over Crown, Wickwire struck out eight and batters to improve to 5-0 on the season. Senior Stephanie Arguello (Placentia, CA/Vista del Lago) and junior Alyson Hampton (Oxnard, CA/Oxnard) each went 3-for-4, scored two runs and stole a base, with Hampton also driving in three runs.

Wickwire was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI; sophomore Dana Torchia (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock Twp.) was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored; and sophomores Nicole Maher (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) (two runs, RBI), Jasmine Picini (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac)(to RBIs, one run) and Samantha Greenberg (Toms River, NJ/Toms River) (run) each hit a double.

Against Augsburg, Jakobsen struck out six and walked none. Senior Samijo Scheer (Corning, NY/Corning East) blasted a grand slam and freshman Liz Thompson (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) was 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Wickwire also belted a homerun, drive in two runs and scored once.

Sophomore Samantha Jauregui (Lindsay, CA/Lindsay) was 4-for-4 with a double, three runs and two RBIs; Torchia drove in two runs; and sophomore Nora Passuite (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and senior Rachel Guszick (Sparrowbush, NY/Port Jervis) (two RBIs) each went 2-for-2 with a double and scored three runs. Junior Lauren Fix (Hudson, NY/ Germantown) scored two runs for the Saxons.

AU is in action next on Sunday, March 23, at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader at Hilbert College.
