Pioneers Drop Second Straight on the Diamond

WINTER HAVEN, FL (3-19-14) – The Utica College baseball team lost another heartbreaker Wednesday afternoon in late innings, 7-6, to New England College in 10 innings at the Russ Matt Tournament in Winter Haven, Florida. UC was led by freshman
Richard Beverly (Bronx, NY/Manhattan Hunter Science) who put together a 3-for-5 day including a double and two base knocks.
The Pioneers move to 3-2 overall and are right back in action Thursday for a twin bill against Framingham State College. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Lake Myrtle Park Field #4. Framingham currently holds an overall record of 4-1 after beating Alfred State twice, New England and Hamilton College.
New England evens its record at 2-2 on the season and is also back on the diamond Thursday to face Sewanee College for a 3:30 p.m. set start.
Utica College 6, New England College 7 – Nine Inning Game
The Pilgrims got on the board first as they used four hits, one walk and a sacrifice to take an early 3-0 lead in the top of first.
UC drew two base on balls in the bottom half however could not manufacture any runs.
NEC came back in the second frame and added another run as it moved to a 4-0 lead on back-to-back hits and another sacrifice.
UC broke up the Pilgrims no hitter in the fifth as they put six consecutive Pioneers on the pads, scoring five runs, on four base knocks and two freebies to take a 5-4 lead midway through the contest.
NEC would knot up the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth with the work of consecutive Pilgrim hits.
After taking a brief one run lead, 6-5, in the bottom of the seventh, UC could not hang on as they allowed the game tying run in the top of ninth and another game-winner late in the extra frame, dropping its second straight game by a score of 7-6.
Junior first baseman
Ryan Watson (Deerfield, NY/Whitesboro) reached base cleanly in all five at bats going 2-for-2 with three walks and two RBI.
Freshman
Richard Beverly (Bronx, NY/Manhattan Hunter Science) went 3-for-5 in his collegiate debut for the Pioneers with a double and two singles.
