INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (March 19, 2014) – The Empire 8 men's swimming and diving athletes opened competition at the 2014 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships at IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
Ithaca junior
Matt Morrison recorded a score of 457.20 in the 3-meter dive preliminaries, earning him a spot in the consolation final and all-America honors. Morrison's all-America nod marked the third of his career in two trips to the NCAA Championships. Morrison finished with a score of 433.10 in the consolation final, ranking fifth.
Ithaca sophomore
Adam Zelehowsky opened the day with a time of 4:33.13 in the preliminaries of the 500-yard freestyle, ranking 17th in the prelims. Junior
Lucas Zelehowsky followed, taking 33rd with a time of 1:53.00 in the prelims of the 200-yard individual medley.
Stevens Institute of Technolgy sophomores
Ravi Sun and
Joshua Lefeber took part in the 200-yard individual medley, placing 35th and 47th, respectively. Sun clocked a 1:53.26, and Lefeber touched at 1:54.32.
Five E8 swimmers competed in the 50-freestyle. Senior
Zack Kundel finished 21st overall with a time of 20.69. Stevens enior Tyler Hessler finished 29th (20.77), followed by Ithaca junior Peter Knight who was 30th (20.80). Stevens senior
Shawn Hanak finished 34th overall, touching a 20.83. Alfred junior David Luke swam to a 42nd place finish in a time of 21.13.
The 200-yard medley relay team earned a berth in the consolation final after placing 16th in the prelims. The top-eight placements in the prelims compete in the championship final, and places nine-through-16 go on to the consolation final.
A 1:32.41 from Sun, Lefeber, junior
John Rees and Hessler in the 200-medley earned the final's chance, but in that final the team was DQ'd by -.01, unfortunately resulting in a 'no-placement'.
Ithaca placed 17th in the preliminaries of the 200-medley relay. The team of Kundel, L. Zelehowsky,
Connor White and
Taylor Van Cott finished in 1:32.97, narrowly missing the cut for all-America honorable mention. After nine events, the Bomber men rank 28th overall.
