WINTER HAVEN, NY (3-20-14) – The Utica College baseball team dropped its fourth straight Thursday after being swept by Framingham State, 4-1 and 6-0, at the Russ Matt Tournament.  Junior backstop Thomas Dinnen (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas ) led the Pioneers going 3-for-5 at the dish with two doubles on the day.

The Pioneers fall to 3-4 overall on the season and return to the diamond Friday to face upstate rival Rochester Institute of Technology in their final contest of Spring Break.  First pitch of the nine inning game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.  Framingham, winners of three-straight, improves to 4-2 on the year and also is back in action Friday as it challenges Huntington for a 1 p.m. set doubleheader.

Framingham 4, Utica 1 – Game One Final

Utica got on the board first as junior first baseman Ryan Watson (Deerfield, NY/Whitesboro) ripped a two-out double scoring senior Alec Choleva (Coventry, CT/East Catholic), who singled, to take a mere 1-0 edge.

The UC lead was short lived however lasting only one inning as FSU posted four runs in the bottom of the second to wrap up the game one scoring. The Rams put together three consecutive hits including a two-run double from Mark Mainini en route to the game one victory.

Both squads put on an impressive defensive show throughout the remainder of the contest as the game featured just four hits, three by UC, over the final four and a half frames.

Utica's Joshua Webb (Verona, NY/VVS) endured his first complete game as a Pioneer tossing six innings while allowing four earned runs on just six hits. Following a rough four run, second inning, Webb stepped up and shutdown the Rams retiring the next nine batters including five in strikeout fashion. The sophomore standout closed out the final four frames with a one-hitter allowing just two base runners.

Nonetheless, the Pioneer lineup could not manage any spark at the plate resulting in the game one defeat. Choleva and Watson managed Utica's lone score while Dinnen added a game-high two hits.

Framingham 6, Utica 0 - Game Two Final

Framingham continued its momentum into game two as it nudged a 2-0 lead after two innings. A first inning double and the help of a Utica wild pitch aided the game's first score followed by a Ram walk, stolen base and single in the second.

FSU would tack on one more in the fifth and two late in the seventh to secure the afternoon sweep.

Choleva tossed 4.1 innings of work allowing two earned runs on just two hits in the loss while William Winsman (Palatine Bridge, NY/Canajoharie) relived him with 2.2 innings and gave up four runs, two earned, on eight knocks.  Choleva fanned an afternoon best six strikeouts.
