Houghton Comes up Short Against Wells

GENEVA, N.Y. -- Houghton men's lacrosse just missed out on their first victory of the season, falling to Wells College, 9-6, at a neutral site game played at Hobart College on Thursday.

Wells got on the board first with a goal just 1:30 into the contest, but Houghton's Christian O'Lone scored his first of the year just three minutes later to tie the score at one. The Express went up 2-1 with a goal in the final 20 seconds of the first quarter.

After Wells scored to extend the lead to two, Sean Daigler and Paul Chapman had back-to-back tallies to pull the Highlanders back even at three. However, the Express took control with three goals in a 41 second span and took a 6-3 lead into the locker room.

Wells extended the lead to four with a goal 1:30 into the third quarter. The Highlanders made it interesting, getting goals from Daigler and Josh Bailey to trim the deficit to 7-5 at the end of the third.

Two Wells goals bookended the second of the game from Chapman to end the scoring.

Daigler finished with two goals and two assists and a game-high 11 ground balls. Chapman added an assist to his two goals and finished with a game-high 15 shots.

Houghton outshot Wells, 42-40, and came out on top of turnovers, forcing 32 while committing just 28, and ground balls (41-32).

Josh Haingray started in goal, allowing six goals and making nine saves in 30 minutes. Gabe Browning played the second half, allowing three goals and stopping 10 shots.

The Highlanders are back in action at Alfred State on Tuesday, March 25 at 4 p.m.
