Utica and Ithaca Open E8 Play With a Win
Utica 10, Hartwick 7
The Utica College men's lacrosse team used five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter for a 10-7 come-from-behind victory over Hartwick College in Empire 8 action Saturday afternoon. Eight different players scored for UC.
Hartwick jumped out to a two-goal lead, however goals by
Adam Zielenski (Holland Patent, NY/Mohawk Valley CC) and
Trent Jacobs (Akwesasne/Brewster Academy) knotted the score after the first fifteen minutes. The Hawks pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 5-3 in the quarter to own a 7-5 lead at halftime.
Both teams played an even third quarter, as neither scored a goal, before UC turned up the pressure and netted five straight in the final frame to cruise to victory.
Christian Reiller (Salamanca, NY/Genesee CC) and
Joe Schoen (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) each tallied two goals in the final 15 minutes, while freshman
Ross Cree (Akwesasne/Salmon River ) also scored to give Utica the 10-7 advantage.
Hartwick threatened in the final 1:41 as UC was assessed three penalties, giving the Hawks a huge three-man advantage. The Pioneer defense held strong, however as Hartwick was not able to register a shot on goal in the man up opportunity leading Utica to its fourth win and first conference victory of the season.
Andrew DiOrio (Greenlawn, NY/CW Post) had six saves in the win, while his counterpart, Michael Rourke had 20 saves in the loss.
Ithaca 21, Elmira 5
The 11th-ranked Ithaca College men's lacrosse team (6-1, 1-0 Empire 8) upended host Elmira (0-5, 0-1 Empire 8), 21-5, Saturday afternoon for its fifth straight victory. With a 6-2 edge at the half, Ithaca posted 13 third-period goals en route to its largest margin of victory since defeating the Soaring Eagles, 22-2, on April 24, 2013.
Ithaca held a 60-29 gap in shots, a 22-10 advantage in ground balls and won 19-of-27 faceoffs. Elmira had 15 turnovers to a season-low eight by the Bombers.
The teams each exchanged a pair of goals in the first period before Ithaca rattled off 12 straight into the third period for a 14-2 gap. Elmira tallied at 7:12, but Ithaca closed out the third with a 19-3 margin. The Soaring Eagles scored the first two of the fourth. The Bombers answered with two more scores for a 21-5 final.

Pat Slawta erupted for a career-best eight-point performance on game-highs of four goals and four assists. Freshman

James Manilla had four assists to go with a pair of scores. Senior

St. John Fisher 11, Oswego 6
The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-0 lead and snapped a two-game losing streak with an 11-6 win over visiting SUNY Oswego on Saturday.
With the win, Fisher, who was coming off a 10-6 loss to No. 1 Rochester Institute of Technology, improves to 3-2, while the Lakers snapped their three-game winning streak and fall to 3-2 on the year as well.
Fisher's
Brett Farrell and
Gary Bova both tallied five points on three goals and two assists.
Greg Ramsden tallied four points on two goals and two assists, while
Jeff Wester also picked up two assists.
Tim Wagner,
Nick Rossi and
Kevin DeOrdio also scored in the win.
Farrell put the Cardinals up for good in the game's opening minute. Wagner made it 2-0 just over two minutes later and Bova scored back-to-back goals to put Fisher up 4-0 less than 10 minutes into the game. Farrell scored his ninth goal of the season on a man-up situation with 1:09 left in the period before the Lakers got on the board just before the end of quarter.
Oswego, capitalizing on four Fisher penalties, controlled most of the second quarter and scored the period's only two goal and trailed by just two at 5-3 going into the second half.
Fisher regained the momentum early in the third with Ramsden scoring 14 seconds in the half. Ramsden added another goal nine minutes later and Rossi extended Fisher's three-goal run with 4:21 left in the third.
The Lakers scored the next two goals, cutting Fisher's lead to 8-5 early in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals pulled away, scoring three goals in a 4:03 span midway through the fourth.
Jamie Campagna got the win in goal finishing with seven saves.
Paul Cefalu was 10-for-20 on faceoffs and tallied five ground balls, as did senior
Taylor Muztafago.
Keuka 11, Alfred 10 (OT)
The Alfred University men's lacrosse team dropped an 11-10 overtime loss to Keuka College, Saturday evening on the road.
Junior attacker
Nicolas Wood (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) struck first for AU before Keuka scored three unanswered goals. Wood scored another goal with seven minutes remaining in the first quarter, cutting the Storm lead to 3-2. Keuka added two more goals in the second quarter, bringing the lead to 4-2 at halftime.

Brendan Sullivan (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) opened the third quarter with a goal, freshman attacker
John Winchell (Vestal, NY/Vestal) scored at the 6:40 minute-mark, and senior attack
Brett Carroll (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) notched another goal, but the Saxons still trailed, 7-5, after three frames of play.
Back-to-back goals from freshman midfielder
Nick Skibitsky (Buffalo, NY/Williamsville East) and Carroll gave Alfred their first lead of the game (10-9) before Keuka evened the score at 10-10 as time expired in regulation.
The Storm scored in the sudden-death overtime period, ending the game and securing the victory.

Nolan Jessop (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) picked up a team-best five groundballs.

Cody O'Connor (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) played the full contest in net with 12 saves.
