UC Softball Wins 2; Houghton Scores 1
UTICA
The Utica College softball team moved its win streak to four Friday morning as it topped Allegheny College 4-2.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind a solo home run by
Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) and two runs by
Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) and
Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville). UC added another tally in the fifth inning as
Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) drove in
Meriah Beauvais (Stockbridge, NY/Stockbridge).
The Gators threatened in the top of the seventh, plating two runs, however that was all the Utica defense would allow as it went on to its fourth straight victory. Russell and senior
Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker) each went 2-for-3 at the plate, while sophomore
Erica Colucci (Glenville, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) gave up just four hits and struck out three in a full seven innings of work.
HOUGHTON
Houghton softball is still looking for their first win of the season after dropping 5-0 and 5-1 decisions at Kenyon College on Friday.
In game one, the Highlanders got a strong pitching performance from
Ashley Schenk (Victoria, BC, Canada, Pacific Christian School), who gave up five runs on six hits in six innings. Unfortunately, the Houghton bats were silenced by Lords' pitcher Maddy Stark who pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts.
Samantha Patoff (Mississauga, ON, Canada, Gordon Graydon Memorial) had Houghton's only hit.
The second game featured a five-run second inning by the Lords in a four-inning game (shortened by darkness). Houghton scored one run in the third. Patoff grounded out to third to drive in
Amber Wolcott (Fillmore, NY, Fillmore) for the score. Patoff finished with two hits, including a double. Wolcott and
Bailey Shattell (Syracuse, NY, Faith Heritage) each had one hit.
Julianna Evans (Lehighton, PA, Lehighton Area) pitched four innings, allowing five runs on seven hits.
