Elmira Cruises to 9-0 Victory Over Wells

Pine Valley, NY -- In their first action since competing in the Empire 8 semifinals in October, the Elmira College women's tennis team rolled to a 9-0 victory over Wells College. The win improves EC's record to 7-3, tying the 2013-14 team for the most wins in a season over the last 12 years.
Ayaka Yoshino '16 was one of six double-winners for the Soaring Eagles, advancing her dual-match unbeaten streak to 17 matches.
Elmira quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the match after all three doubles teams picked up victories. The second doubles team of
Ellen Plowman '16 and
Kristi Chanda '17 took care of business with an 8-0 win. Next to secure a victory was the first doubles pairing of Yoshino and
Kayla Fitzgerald '15, who won 8-2. Closing out a perfect start to the match were
Stephanie Tock '16 and
Megan Boisclair '15, both seeing action in doubles for the first time this season, who picked up an 8-3 win at third doubles.
The singles matches were much of the same as Elmira won three of the singles matches by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores. Doing the damage for EC was Yoshino, Chanda, and Boisclair at first, fifth, and sixth singles respectively. Fitzgerald and Plowman each came off the court victorious after cruising to 6-1, 6-2 wins at second and fourth singles, respectively.
Elmira seemed on their way to a relatively easy 9-0 victory, but Tock had her work cut out for her at third singles. Wells' Taryn Heath gave Tock all she could handle in the first set, but Tock came out on top, 7-5. Tock took full advantage of the momentum she gained by winning the close first set by rolling to a 6-2 victory in the second set to close out the match.
Elmira will go for win number eight on Friday, March 28th when the Soaring Eagles host Oswego State. The second match of EC's three-match spring schedule is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
