Ducks and Hawks Rally at Home
Hartwick 12, King's 9
The Hartwick men's lacrosse team trailed 9-8 midway through the fourth quarter but scored four straight times to come away with a 12-9 win over King's College on Tuesday afternoon at Wright Stadium. The win gives Hartwick a record of 2-4 while the Monarchs fall to 4-4.
The Monarchs struck first at 13:38 of the first period on a goal from Billy McCullough.
Roy Simmons evened it for 'Wick on a man-up goal at 5:13 with an assist from
Mike Vaglica. Vaglica would score one of his own at 1:49 to give the Hawks a 2-1 advantage after one quarter of play.
King's responded in the second quarter with two scores to move ahead 3-2 at 9:37. The Hawks regained the lead on two man-up goals, one from
Zach Gropper, and the other from Vaglica to go into halftime ahead 4-3.
Hartwick took its late first half momentum into the third quarter as Simmons tallied his second goal of the afternoon just 46 seconds into the period and assisted
Sean Brown on the next score at 12:27 to put 'Wick ahead 6-3. The Monarchs got one back on Kevin Sweeney's goal but Vaglica would score unassisted to give the Hawks a 7-4 lead at 4:21.
The Monarchs tacked one two goals to trail 7-6 at 2:46. Vaglica's goal with 1:38 remaining in the third frame made it 8-6 but Kyle Wilk's score for King's made it 8-7 heading into the final quarter of play.
The Monarchs tied the contest up 48 seconds into the fourth period and then went ahead 9-8 at 11:21 on an unassisted goal by Pat Bonnot. The score remained that way for 3:23 until Brown tallied his second goal of the day to even the game at 9-all.
Hartwick won the ensuing faceoff. Gropper got a shot off that deflected off the stick of Monarch goalie Derek Bowman and off of
Connor Long with the ball getting past Bowman for the surprising goal to give 'Wick a 10-9 lead at 6:37. Hartwick added scores from Gropper and Simmons while goalie
Michael Rourke came up with two big saves to preserve the Hawks' win.
Vaglica led the way for Hartwick with four goals and also assisted on two others. Simmons scored three times and added two assists. Gropper and Brown had a pair of scores. Long had one goal. Rourke turned away 12 shots in the cage.
Sweeney and McCullough had two goals each to lead the Monarchs. AJ Bungert, Mike O'Brien, Pat Bonnot, Wilk, and Evan Lawshe all scored once. Kieran McMahon had four helpers while Sweeney added one. Bowman had eight saves in goal.
The Hawks had a small lead in shots, 35-33, and in ground balls, 36-35.
Shane Latsko scooped up a team-high eight groundballs while winning 17 out of 25 face-offs. Rourke and
Fred Golini both had four ground balls.
The Hawks were effective on the extra-man opportunity as they went 3-for-7. The 'Wick defense killed off all six man-up situations for King's.
Stevens 14, Eastern Connecticut State 7
The Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team improved to 3-5 on the season with a 14-7 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University at the De Baun Athletic Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
Stevens fell behind Eastern Connecticut (4-4), 3-0, midway through the first quarter after the Warriors tallied three goals within a 1:09 span (9:56 to 8:47). Junior
Michael Maroon posted the Ducks' first score on a man-up chance at the 6:18 mark of the first off a pass from sophomore
Andrew Scrutchfield, but Eastern answered right back 1:12 later. With just over minutes left in the first, sophomore
Michael Serrante notched an unassisted tally to cut Stevens' deficit in half and then senior
Charlie Cronin picked up his first of four goals with 1:02 remaining.
There was not much offense on display in the second quarter, as both teams only scored once. Eastern went back up by two, 5-3, just under four minutes in and the Ducks finally found the back of the net with 43 seconds left before halftime on the second score from Scrutchfield.
Eastern's starting goalie Blake Smaldone made seven saves in the first half but was replaced by Brendan Gillotti as the third quarter began.
Stevens seemed to thrive off the switch in cage for the Warriors and netted five goals in the third period to go from trailing, 5-4, to leading, 9-6, with 15 minutes to play. Serrante tallied the equalizer with 12:43 to go in the third and then Cronin put the Ducks ahead for good not even a minute later off a feed from Scrutchfield. Sophomore
Matt Ferentini got in on the action after nearly five minutes elapsed in the third to put Stevens head by two scores and then Cronin capped off the five-goal run on another man-up chance which was assisted by senior
Sean Scrudato with 6:48 left in the frame. ECSU ended its scoring drought of 24:20 to climb back to an 8-6 difference, but freshman
Connor Towne gave the Ducks a three-goal cushion with just 27 second left on the clock before the fourth quarter got underway.
The Ducks continued to extend their lead in the fourth as sophomore
Anthony Raposo netted his first of two final period goals at the 11:48 mark. Stevens would capitalize on another man-up advantage with just under five minutes to go on Cronin's fourth goal which was assisted by Maroon to make it an 11-6 ballgame. Ferentini would score again at the 3:28 mark before ECSU could put one in with 2:11 left in regulation. Stevens tacked on two more in the final 1:14 from Raposo and a man-up chance by Ferentini from Scrutchfield.
Freshman
Kevin Rafferty stopped three shots for his third win of the season in 60 minutes of action.
Sophomores
Brett Incollingo and
Jeff Wyckoff split time at the faceoff "X" and won 12-of-25 tries. Incollingo went 9-for-15 with seven groundballs, while Wyckoff won three and scooped up a pair of groundballs.
Sophomore
DJ Bonifacic picked up six groundballs, while classmate
Troy Gassaway caused four turnovers and added three groundballs. Senior
Tim Culloty chipped in seven groundballs on the defensive end.
Stevens dominated the contest in shots, 59-21, and forced 14 of ECSU's 25 turnovers. The Ducks also held a distinct edge in groundballs, 46-29 and converted on all but one clear in 17 attempts (ECSU went 13-for-22).
Alfred State 13, Houghton 8
Houghton men's lacrosse fell behind, 5-1, after the first quarter and couldn't recover in a 13-8 loss to Alfred State College on Tuesday.
The Highlanders outscored ASU 2-1 in the second quarter, and goals were even at three apiece in the third quarter. The Pioneers outscored the Highlanders 4-2 in the final 15 minutes.
Paul Chapman (Kemptville, ON, Canada, North Greenville District) scored three goals and added an assist to lead the Highlanders.
Sean Daigler (Elma, Ny, Iroquois) added two goals an assist,
Joshua Bailey (Millerton, Pa, Williamson HS) had two goals, and
Cameron Groff (Jasper, Ny, Jasper-Troupsburg) scored once.
Gabriel Browning (Aitkin, MN, Aitkin HS) played the full 60 minutes in goal, making 20 saves.
The Pioneers outshot the Highlanders 52-29 and had a 60-37 advantage in ground balls.
