Empire 8 Athletic Conference has announced the Track Athlete, Field Athlete, Rookie and Coach of the Year awards for the 2013-14 women’s indoor track and field season. The conference coaches vote on the awards.

Stevens Institute of Technology sophomores Amy Regan and Gladys Njoku have been named the Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Year, respectively.

Regan set three school-records and became a two-time NCAA All-American throughout the season. She was fifth at the NCAA’s in the 5000-meter run on the back of a school-record time of 16:51.36. The next day she secured an eighth place showing in the 3,000-meter run in school-record fashion of 9:47.27. A week prior to the nationals, Regan placed second at ECAC’s in the 1 mile with a school record time of 4:59.97. At the Empire 8 championships she had two top placements in the 5,000-meter run (18:01.03) and as part of the distance medley relay team (12.51.99).

Njoku earned her first All-America honor as she placed second overall in the high jump with a school-record mark of 1.75 meters (5 feet, 8.75 inches) at the NCAA Championships. Njoku steadily improved throughout the season as she won the Empire 8 championship with a height of 1.65m and then placed seconds at ECAC’s with a mark of 1.74m.

Ithaca freshman Natalie Meyer was a clear favorite for Rookie of the Year after placing 14th in the high jump at the NCAA’s with a height of 1.65 meters, the same height as the eighth place finisher. Meyer was named the NYSCTC Rookie of the Meet after winning the pentathlon (2955 points) and placing second in the open high jump with a clear of 1.65 meters. The rookie finished in a tie for eighth place (1.64m) in the high jump at the ECAC Championships. At the E8 Championships she placed third in the long with a distance of 5.18 meters and also posted a third-place clear of 1.60 meters in the high jump.

Steven’s Justin Wood has been named the Women’s Indoor Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. Six individuals and one relay qualified for ECAC’s under Wood’s tutelage and three of those individuals went on to compete at the National Championships. As a team the Ducks placed second at the Empire 8 Championships, 10th at ECAC’s and a program best 10th place finish at NCAA’s.  Stevens was ranked consistently throughout the season in the Atlantic Region and earned a national ranking as high as No. 10.
