Box Score
Pine Valley, NY -- The Elmira College women's tennis team moved to 2-0 in their spring season, defeating Oswego State, 8-1 at the Murray Athletic Center. With the victory, EC's overall record for 2013-14 is now 8-3, giving the Purple and Gold the most wins in a season in at least the last 13 years.
The Soaring Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 advantage thanks to a strong showing in doubles.
Amy Schmidt '15, who was making her first appearance of the spring season, and
Ayaka Yoshino '16 teamed up for the first time ever and cruised to an 8-0 win at first doubles. Elmira also got 8-3 and 8-5 wins from their second and third doubles teams, respectively, to move ahead 3-0 as the women entered singles play.
EC dominated singles early on as Yoshino,
Kayla Fitzgerald '15, and
Ellen Plowman '16 walked away with relatively easy victories. Yoshino earned her 19th consecutive dual-match victory after defeating her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at second singles, Fitzgerald picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at third singles, and Plowman put Elmira ahead 6-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at fifth singles.
Megan Boisclair '15 added to EC's lead with a 6-1, 6-3 win at sixth singles, leaving just Schmidt and
Stephanie Tock '16 on the court.
After winning a close first set in a tiebreaker, Schmidt took the second set in convincing fashion, closing out the straight set victory at first singles. Elmira's only defeat of the match came at fourth singles where Tock was in a tight battle. Tock lost the first set in a tiebreaker and nearly forced a tiebreaker in the second set, but the sophomore fell 6-4 in the second set to Oswego's Haley Miller.
The Soaring Eagles have a short turnaround as the women close out the 2013-14 season with a match against Roberts Wesleyan College tomorrow, March 29th at 10:00 a.m.
